EVANSVILLE, Indiana — On Halloween night, a University of Evansville security guard was hurt while trying to stop a brawl outside the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, when a fight broke out in the parking lot adjacent to the fraternity.
Guard’s Attempt to Intervene
According to a police report, the guard approached the scene to separate the participants. As he moved in, a man grabbed the guard from behind and pulled him backward. The guard managed to bring the assailant to the ground, but in the struggle he twisted his knee, sustaining an injury that required medical attention.
Suspect Fled the Scene
After the guard’s intervention, the suspect fled the area on crutches. A witness later reported that the man raised one of his crutches as if he might strike the guard again. The witness shouted for him to stop, prompting the suspect to run off.
University Response
University Chief Communications Officer Noah Alatza confirmed that the school is cooperating fully with the Evansville Police Department’s investigation. “The University is cooperating with the Evansville Police Department as it investigates the incident. The safety of our campus community remains a top priority, and we will provide additional information as appropriate,” Alatza said.
Police Investigation Ongoing
Evansville police are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering statements from witnesses to identify the individual responsible for the assault on the guard. No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation remains active.
Community Concerns
The incident has raised concerns among students, parents, and local residents about campus safety during holiday celebrations. While the university has emphasized its commitment to a secure environment, many are calling for increased security presence at fraternity events, especially during high‑traffic times like Halloween.
Looking Ahead
The university plans to review its security protocols and consider additional measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Students are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and to cooperate with campus police and university officials.
Authorities ask anyone with further information about the suspect or the altercation to contact the Evansville Police Department.
