Verona Pizza Kitchen Earns Its Regulars the Hard Way

Verona Pizza Kitchen on Preston Road has been making Neapolitan-style pizza in Plano for years without much fanfare, which is probably why the dining room fills up on a Thursday night the same way it does on Saturday.

The place sits in a strip center off Preston, north of Park Boulevard — not the kind of location that generates Instagram pilgrimages. The room is clean and simple: exposed brick, dark wood, wine bottles lining the walls. It seats maybe sixty people comfortably. Parking is easy. The noise level stays reasonable enough that you can hold a conversation, which is rarer than it should be in this part of town.

The pizza is the reason to go, full stop. The dough is fermented long enough to develop real flavor — slightly chewy at the crust, thin in the middle, with char marks that tell you the oven means business. The Margherita is the honest test of any place like this, and Verona passes it: San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, a drizzle of olive oil, nothing extra. It arrives blistered and imperfect the way good Neapolitan pizza should. The Diavola, with spicy salami and a little honey drizzled over the top, is worth ordering once you’ve had the Margherita and want to push further.

The pasta runs a shorter list than the pizza menu, but the cacio e pepe is competent and the carbonara doesn’t cut corners with cream, which matters to people who care about that sort of thing. Appetizers include a burrata plate that comes with good tomatoes when tomatoes are in season and decent ones when they’re not — an honest result either way.

Wine is where Verona makes an effort beyond the expected. The list leans Italian, with some California options, and the by-the-glass pours are reasonably priced at $10–$14. The staff knows the list without being precious about it. Ask them what’s drinking well and they’ll tell you plainly.

Dinner for two — a pizza, a shared appetizer, two glasses of wine — typically runs $60–$75 before tip, depending on what you order. That’s not cheap for a strip mall dinner, but it’s fair for what arrives at the table. Lunch is a lower-key affair, quicker and a few dollars lighter.

The crowd skews toward families from the surrounding neighborhoods and couples who have clearly been coming long enough to have a usual table. Service is attentive without hovering. The kitchen moves at a steady pace — don’t come expecting a fast turnaround if the room is full, but you won’t be sitting forty-five minutes between courses either.

Reservations are accepted and worth making on weekend evenings. Weeknight dinners before seven are generally walkable. The restaurant closes between lunch and dinner service, so don’t show up at three expecting a slice.

What Verona does is make reliable, honestly sourced Italian food in a neighborhood that has plenty of options and doesn’t need another mediocre one. That it continues to fill seats on its own merit, without a celebrity chef or a social media moment behind it, says something real about the food.
