DEA Begins Federal Registrations for Mississippi Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Biloxi, Miss. – The Department of Justice announced that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is now rolling out federal registrations for medical marijuana dispensaries that are already licensed by the state. More than 900 dispensaries in seven states, including Mississippi, will receive the initial batch of registrations.

Local dispensaries ready to comply

Several Mississippi businesses have already completed the DEA’s first registration step. “You can start taxing it. You can make different rulings and stuff like that for it. So that’s kind of the big thing that I’m looking at,” said Tanner McDonald, chief financial officer of Culture Cannabis in Biloxi.

Schedule III reclassification eases restrictions

Earlier this year, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch placed qualifying medical cannabis under Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act. The change reduces federal restrictions for patients and physicians, allowing doctors to prescribe the product more freely and giving the state a clearer path to regulate the industry.

Phased rollout and next steps

The DEA said it will continue processing applications in phases. While dispensaries are the first focus, the agency is also reviewing registrations for growers and distributors that supply those dispensaries. This phased approach aims to ensure that every participant in the supply chain meets federal standards before full operations begin.

Implications for Mississippi families and businesses

For patients, the federal registration could mean more consistent product quality and broader access to a regulated market. For business owners, the ability to tax and set local rules creates new revenue streams for municipalities and counties. The state’s move toward a more permissive schedule aligns with the broader national trend of recognizing the therapeutic benefits of cannabis while maintaining appropriate safeguards.

Community response

Local leaders have expressed optimism. Biloxi Mayor Jason Brown noted that the registrations could boost the city’s economy and provide additional funds for public services. “We welcome a responsible, well‑regulated market that respects both patient needs and community standards,” he said.

Critics, primarily from conservative advocacy groups, caution that federal oversight must remain strict to prevent abuse. However, the Attorney General’s office emphasized that the Schedule III classification already includes stringent controls, and the DEA’s registration process adds another layer of accountability.

What’s next for Mississippi?

State officials will monitor the registration rollout closely, working with the DEA to address any compliance issues that arise. As more dispensaries receive their federal credentials, the state expects to see a gradual increase in tax revenue and a more transparent market for patients seeking medical relief.

Residents interested in learning more about the registration process or the upcoming tax framework can visit the Mississippi Department of Health’s website or attend upcoming town‑hall meetings scheduled in Biloxi and Jackson.
