FBI Citizens Academy Opens Doors in Durant, Boosting Community Safety Awareness

Durant, Oklahoma – In a move that underscores the partnership between federal law‑enforcement and local communities, the FBI’s Oklahoma City Division launched its inaugural Citizens Academy right here in Durant. Over three consecutive Fridays, a diverse group of participants stepped inside a classroom that is usually off‑limits, gaining a rare glimpse into the bureau’s daily work.

Local Leaders Gain Direct Insight

Among the attendees were police officers, teachers, government officials and other civic leaders eager to understand how the FBI tackles criminal threats, especially those that cross state lines or involve Indian Country jurisdiction. Acting Assistant Special Agent Terry Heatherman explained that the academy’s purpose is simple: “to talk about what the FBI does, so that people have a better understanding of kind of what we do.”

Steve Cherry, a police officer at Grayson College, called the experience “very interesting,” noting that agents shared information “that they don’t share with the public.” Grayson County resident Melida Ailshire added that participants have a responsibility to serve as ambassadors for the knowledge they acquire, emphasizing the role of informed citizens in safeguarding families.

Curriculum Focused on Real‑World Threats

The three‑day program covered a range of topics, from the basics of federal criminal law to the complexities of jurisdiction in Indian Country. Agents also touched on aspects of the bureau’s top‑secret work, offering a balanced view that respected security protocols while still educating the public.

Heatherman highlighted the collaborative nature of the class: “It’s a mix of educators, government officials, and they’re all very interested in what we do. They’ve been very vocal and we’re very appreciative of them.” This sentiment reflects a shared commitment to protecting families and upholding the Constitution through transparent cooperation.

Looking Ahead

The FBI plans to host another Citizens Academy next year somewhere else in Oklahoma, though the location has not yet been announced. The success of the Durant session suggests that future classes will continue to build bridges between federal agents and the communities they serve, reinforcing the values of faith, family and liberty that define our region.

By opening its doors to local stakeholders, the FBI not only demystifies its operations but also empowers citizens to become proactive partners in public safety. As Durant residents walk away with a deeper understanding of federal law‑enforcement, the city stands better prepared to confront threats and protect the traditional families that form the backbone of our neighborhoods.
