Local Safety Expert Shares Practical Halloween Tips for Colorado Springs Families

With Halloween just a day away, Colorado Springs families are busy preparing for a night of trick‑or‑treating. To help ensure the evening stays fun and safe, local safety specialist Paul Szych of the Colorado Springs Police Department outlined a series of practical steps for parents and teens.

Plan the Route Ahead of Time

Szych stressed that the first step is a simple one: map out a clear, well‑lit route before stepping onto the streets. “Knowing where you’re going reduces the chance of getting lost or wandering into unsafe neighborhoods,” he said. Parents should walk the route with their children beforehand, noting any potential hazards such as steep driveways or busy intersections.

Make Costumes Visible

Kids in dark costumes can be hard for drivers to see. Szych recommends attaching reflective tape to the edges of outfits or using glow sticks on hats, shoes, and backpacks. “A little extra visibility can make a big difference when cars are passing by,” he explained.

Keep Young Children Close

For younger children, Szych advises that an adult accompany them at all times. He suggests designating a trusted adult to stay on the porch while the child collects candy, and to never allow kids to enter a stranger’s home, even if invited. “The same criminal elements that exist every day are still out on Halloween night looking for easy targets,” Szych warned.

Teen Safety and Check‑Ins

Older kids heading out with friends should have a reliable way to check in with parents. Szych recommends using a shared location feature on smartphones or a group messaging app so parents can monitor where their teens are throughout the evening.

Avoid Pranks That Lead to Trouble

While harmless jokes are part of the holiday spirit, Szych cautioned against pranks that could result in criminal charges, such as egging houses or vandalizing property. “What starts as a joke can quickly become a legal issue,” he said, urging teens to think before they act.

Final Reminders for a Safe Night

In addition to the above tips, Szych reminded parents to remind children to stay on sidewalks, cross at marked crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing streets. He also suggested keeping flashlights handy and ensuring that pets are secured inside the home to avoid accidental bites.

By following these straightforward guidelines, Colorado Springs residents can enjoy a Halloween that celebrates community, family, and safety. As Szych put it, “When we plan ahead and stay vigilant, we protect our children and keep the spirit of the holiday alive for everyone.”
