Morning commuters in Cody should prepare for a new traffic pattern on Big Horn Avenue. City crews, in partnership with the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) and Park County School District 6, are putting the finishing touches on a HAWK (High‑Intensity Activated) pedestrian signal at the intersection of Big Horn Avenue and Freedom Street.
Why the signal matters
The project directly addresses safety concerns for students at Cody Middle School, who cross the heavily traveled Big Horn Avenue each day. “This is an effort to make that intersection safer for young people going to Cody Middle School,” said WYDOT Senior Public Relations Specialist Cody Beers. “We’re excited about it — it’s been a long time coming.”
Community advocacy drives the effort
The crosswalk stems from a study that followed an October 2020 meeting among city officials, WYDOT and the school district. Former school board trustee Stephanie Bell emerged as a leading advocate, pushing the project forward and helping to accelerate construction. Beers recalled Bell’s role, noting that her dedication kept the crosswalk on the agenda and ensured it moved from concept to reality.
What drivers can expect
Once the HAWK signal is operational, drivers will see a flashing beacon and a pedestrian‑activated walk sign that gives students a clear, protected window to cross. Beers added that law‑enforcement presence will increase in the area to reinforce compliance with the new traffic pattern. “I’m sure if (law‑enforcement officers) see the need to educate or write on some carbon paper, they will,” he joked, underscoring the collaborative approach between transportation officials and local police.
Education campaign for students
To ensure the signal’s success, WYDOT, the city of Cody and the school district have launched an educational campaign aimed at teaching students how to use the pedestrian‑activated system correctly. The program includes classroom presentations, safety drills and informational videos that will be shared with families and staff.
Listen to the discussion
For a deeper look at the project, listeners can tune in to the October 29 “Speak Your Piece” interview on KODI, where WYDOT’s Cody Beers speaks with news director Dan Rasmussen about the crosswalk’s development, community impact and next steps.
The new HAWK signal is slated to be completed within the next month, marking a significant step forward in protecting Cody’s youth and reinforcing the city’s commitment to safe, family‑friendly streets.
