The Hidden Threat of Ranked‑Choice Voting: How a Decoy Candidate Could Undermine American Elections

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of The Orange Report.

What would you do if the ballot you received forced you to rank ten candidates for every office, and a duplicate name was deliberately placed to confuse voters? That scenario is no longer a hypothetical for many Americans, and Kira Davis of The Orange Report warns it could become a national crisis.

The Dan Sullivan Scandal: A Decoy on the Ballot

In Alaska, the controversy began when two candidates named Dan Sullivan appeared on the same ballot. The incumbent senator, Dan Sullivan, publicly urged voters to rank the legitimate candidate first, then the Republican challenger Heinke, and finally the “fake Dan Sullivan” listed as a decoy. Davis notes that this confusion is not a one‑off mistake but part of a broader strategy to manipulate the ranked‑choice system.

“If you rank the real Dan Sullivan at the top, then the next Republican, and then the fake Dan Sullivan, you can see how the system is being gamed,” Davis recounted from the show. The incident has sparked accusations of election fraud, with legal experts warning that placing a decoy candidate could lead to both criminal and civil liabilities.

Ranked‑Choice Voting Explained—and Why It Matters

Ranked‑choice voting (RCV) requires voters to order candidates by preference. If no one achieves a majority, the lowest‑ranking candidates are eliminated and their votes transferred to the next choice on each ballot. While proponents argue it encourages broader representation, Davis argues the method is “absolutely insidious” and “should be illegal.”

She highlighted several practical concerns: the complexity of ranking dozens of offices, the risk of ballots being discarded if a voter fails to rank enough candidates, and the potential for campaign operatives to engineer outcomes by inserting decoy names. “Your vote can get thrown out,” she warned, emphasizing that voters may unknowingly empower candidates who never earned a true majority.

Legal and Ethical Implications

Legal commentator Jonathan Turley, featured in the show, described the decoy strategy as “a slap in the face to the American people.” Turley argued that while merely placing a decoy candidate might not be unlawful, deliberately misleading voters in writing could cross the line into illegal conduct. Davis added that campaign lawyers involved with the Peltola campaign are now facing pressure to withdraw, fearing they could become witnesses or targets in ongoing investigations.

“These lawyers better quit,” Davis quoted Turley saying, underscoring the seriousness of the potential fallout. The New York Times reportedly dropped a story on the scandal days before the election, a move Davis attributes to media fatigue from other high‑profile controversies.

Why Ranked‑Choice Voting Could Spread Nationwide

RCV is already in use in several hundred municipalities, and Idaho is set to revisit the measure on its ballot. Davis warned that once adopted at the state level, the system could proliferate across the country, making it harder for ordinary voters to understand and participate effectively.

“Imagine getting a ballot that is dozens and dozens of pages long, and you’ve got to rank every office,” she said. “Some of you aren’t going to make it to the bottom of the ballot because you’re exhausted.” This exhaustion, she argues, is precisely what the left‑leaning advocates of RCV hope to exploit, using the complexity to suppress turnout among those less inclined to navigate a labyrinthine voting process.

What Voters Can Do Now

For voters concerned about RCV, Davis recommends staying informed and demanding transparency from local election officials. She urges citizens to research how their state or municipality handles ballot design and to voice opposition to any proposals that would replace the simple plurality system with a ranked format.

“You are the warrior, you are the soldier,” Davis reminded listeners, emphasizing personal responsibility over reliance on any single political figure. While President Trump’s administration provides a platform for reform, the battle over voting methods, she asserts, is ultimately fought by everyday Americans at the polls.

As the debate over ranked‑choice voting intensifies, the Dan Sullivan scandal serves as a cautionary tale of how easily the system can be weaponized. Vigilance, legal scrutiny, and public awareness will be crucial to safeguarding the integrity of American elections.
