RFK Jr. Calls Iowa Election ‘Most Important’ at Make America Healthy Again Rally

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed a crowd Wednesday night in Iowa, declaring the state’s election “the most important election going on in this country.” The remarks were made at a Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) rally that also featured endorsements of Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn and congressional candidate Joe Mitchell for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District.

Rally agenda and funding

The event, organized by the MAHA political action committee, is focused on what the group calls “food freedom” and “medical freedom.” MAHA announced more than $1.9 million in commitments for Lahn and six House candidates, underscoring the organization’s intent to back candidates who support its agenda.

Lahn’s platform for Iowa

During his remarks, Lahn urged Iowa to become “the real food capital of the country,” arguing that expanding production of healthier foods could lower costs for families. He highlighted regenerative farming practices as a way to benefit both farmers and their families, and pledged to work with agricultural producers to improve water quality for rural and urban communities alike.

Lahn also described the movement as a coalition of people seeking healthier food for children and greater say in medical decisions. While acknowledging a diversity of views among speakers, he stressed that the group is not a monolith.

Controversial positions

Lahn expressed support for removing COVID‑19 vaccines from the market, labeling the effort a “pro‑life mission.” He also voiced opposition to full legalization of medical marijuana, while supporting expanded access for patients.

Attendees cited concerns about cancer rates and water quality as motivations for attending. “We’re very health conscious,” said Randy Sawadzky of Indianola, noting the frequent discussion of Iowa’s cancer rates.

Responses from Democratic campaigns

Democratic campaigns quickly responded to the rally’s health‑policy positions. Emma O’Brien, deputy campaign manager for Rob Sand, criticized Lahn’s stance, saying he supports an “extreme agenda” that would leave Iowans sicker and that he backs bans on all mRNA vaccines, a promising cancer treatment, despite rising cancer rates.

Jackson Smith, campaign manager for Lindsay for Iowa, attacked congressional candidate Joe Mitchell, accusing him of supporting Medicaid cuts that would jeopardize rural health‑care funding and of seeking to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which could end coverage for people with pre‑existing conditions such as cancer.

Kennedy’s faith‑based outreach

Earlier in the evening, Kennedy visited Sheepgate, a Christian recovery center in Colfax, and spoke about the administration’s interest in making federal funding available to faith‑based recovery programs. He described the Great American Recovery Program as a vehicle to support individuals through treatment, housing, jobs, and stability.

Kennedy also recalled his May visit to Iowa, when he joined Governor Kim Reynolds in Des Moines to sign the state’s Make America Healthy Again Act. The law includes provisions on school food, physical education, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program purchases, and classroom screen time.

Looking ahead

With less than a week until Election Day, the rally underscores the intensity of the upcoming contests for governor and the 2nd Congressional District. Both candidates have positioned themselves around health‑focused messaging, while Democratic opponents are framing the race as a choice between public‑health protections and what they describe as an “extreme” agenda.
