Virginia Beach – The city’s Electoral Board announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will send neutral observers to several polling locations on Election Day. Chair Nanette Miller said the board received an email from the Justice Department requesting permission for observers to be present in designated areas of precincts.
How the observers will operate
Miller explained that the observers will sit in a specific area, watch the voting process, and may ask questions if any issues arise. The city is still deciding which precincts will host the observers, but Miller expects one or two groups of two monitors each.
First time in Virginia Beach
According to Miller, this is the first instance the Justice Department has asked to place observers in Virginia Beach. “We don’t have issues and problems, and I’m more than happy to have the Department of Justice come in and see how the election process actually works,” she said.
State guidance and public concern
The request coincides with a bulletin from the Virginia Department of Elections that outlines how local officials should handle observers. The bulletin cites heightened public concern about potential influence in the 2026 general election, including worries about disruptive monitors, the deployment of armed federal agents, and the seizure of election materials.
DOJ’s nationwide observer program
A DOJ spokesperson said the department plans to have approximately 1,000 monitors across all 50 states. Each monitor will simply observe and report any potential violations of federal law to the department for review after Election Day.
Local officials prepared
Miller added that Virginia Beach election staff are ready to address any issues that might arise. “I have no concerns if they do what they’re supposed to do, which is observe,” she said. “If there are any issues with anyone, including a representative from a party, the chiefs know how to handle those situations and everything will be done to the letter of the law.”
Nonpartisan monitoring groups weigh in
The Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan organization that tracks the Justice Department’s observer program, noted that while the program has attracted media attention, the majority of federal observers have not caused problems in other locations.
What voters need to know
Voters in Virginia Beach should expect to see a small number of federal observers at their polling places on Election Day. The observers are not there to interfere with voting; their role is limited to watching the process and reporting any irregularities to the DOJ after the polls close.
City officials encourage voters to report any concerns to poll workers, who are trained to handle issues promptly and in accordance with state law.
