TxDOT completes $677 million Oak Hill Parkway expansion, easing Southwest Austin traffic

Southwest Austin residents can now enjoy a smoother commute as TxDOT wraps up the $677 million Oak Hill Parkway expansion. The seven‑mile corridor, once a four‑lane undivided road, has been transformed into a six‑lane divided highway with new frontage roads, flyover ramps at the “Y” (the intersection of Hwy 71 and Hwy 290), and 15 miles of shared‑use paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

Project highlights

Construction began in 2021 and was completed on schedule, with the ribbon‑cutting ceremony held on Sept. 24. Texas Transportation Commissioner Robert Vaughn praised the project, saying TxDOT remains “committed to advancing safety, mobility and connectivity throughout Austin as well as the entire state.” Commissioner Steven Alvis added that the upgrade addresses one of the region’s most congested corridors.

The new design provides two to three main lanes and frontage‑road lanes in each direction, plus bridge‑style intersections at Convict Hill Road, RM 1826, Scenic Brook Drive and Circle Drive. The flyover ramps at the “Y” allow through traffic to bypass signal‑controlled intersections, reducing stop‑and‑go delays.

Safety and emergency response

TxDOT public information officer Antonio Luján noted that while specific emergency‑response data are not yet available, the nonstop main lanes and flyover ramps are expected to improve response times by letting emergency vehicles travel the corridor without stopping at traffic signals. An additional emergency‑vehicle access route was added along westbound Hwy 290 between Thunderbird Road and Scenic Brook Drive.

Local impact and business response

Local business owners have observed mixed effects. Natalie Sanders, general manager of Sweet Treets in Oak Hill Centre, said the traffic bottleneck at William Cannon has improved, but foot traffic remains lower than before construction. “Our retail traffic is still severely impacted now that it’s a thruway,” she explained.

Matthew Fouss, a shift leader at Tucci’s Southside Subs, reported that the business adapted by updating its point‑of‑sale system to accept all delivery services, which boosted sales despite higher fees to third‑party apps. He added, “I’m slightly impressed by the speed at which they did it, but it could have been a little more organized.” Both owners anticipate that the improved roadway will eventually attract new commercial development and increase long‑term patronage.

Future work

While the major construction is finished, TxDOT continues to finalize shared‑use paths, landscaping, and final painting through November. The agency expects the completed project to support the region’s rapid growth—Texas’s population is projected to rise from nearly 32 million today to 42 million by 2060, with Austin already surpassing one million residents.

According to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, Oak Hill Parkway ranked 45th on the 2025 Top 100 Congested Road Segments in the state. Luján observed a noticeable improvement for drivers, noting that separating local traffic from through traffic with bypass lanes has made the corridor feel faster and safer.

Community outlook

Local residents are encouraged to explore the upgraded route. “If you haven’t been over here lately, come check it out because it’s a lot easier to get around,” said Fouss, expressing optimism that the area’s businesses will benefit as traffic flows more smoothly.
