Florida residents left stranded in Cambodia after cruise line halts operations

When Villa Vie Residences announced on Tuesday that it was suspending operations in Cambodia, a handful of Floridians who had signed long‑term residency contracts found themselves stuck aboard the MV Odyssey. The company blamed sharply rising fuel prices in Asian waters, which it says have pushed monthly per‑cabin fuel expenses from roughly $1,800 to as much as $8,000.

Residents share their experience

Joel Greiff, who moved from Naples, Florida, to the ship 26 days ago, explained that he paid a $350,000 upfront, lifetime‑prepaid contract with the expectation of living on the vessel for decades. “I signed a lifetime prepaid contract, and I was going to live on that for 10, 20 or 73 years,” Greiff said.

Greiff recalled a recent excursion to Thailand where he and a friend visited an elephant sanctuary, describing the trip as a highlight of the cruise’s promised lifestyle of luxury and exploration.

Shirene Thomas, originally from Citrus Hills, Florida, and now residing in North Carolina, spent nearly two years on the Odyssey after its launch from Northern Ireland. She described the sudden halt as unsettling. “Being stranded in Cambodia is not ideal,” Thomas said. “It was a lot of panic for those of us who hadn’t been off the ship. I think we’ve been on for like 15 days in two years.”

Company explains the financial pressure

In a statement, Villa Vie Residences said the surge in fuel costs has made its operating model “unsustainable.” The company noted that fuel expenses that historically averaged about $1,800 per cabin per month have risen to an estimated $6,000‑$8,000 in parts of Asia. Because the company cannot simply pass those increases on to residents, it faces a shortfall that forced the suspension.

Thomas added that residents had been receiving repeated cash calls for fuel surcharges and other fees. “As of a few days ago, they kept asking for these cash calls and ins and fuel surcharges and everything. Always had a different name, but basically always constantly, continually asking us for cash,” she said.

Steps toward resolution

Villa Vie Residences said it is taking measures to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port. The company also announced a 60‑day restructuring and recapitalization process aimed at supporting residents, crew, and employees.

According to the statement, the company is working with affected residents to coordinate disembarkation and temporary living arrangements. While the exact timeline for returning to normal operations remains unclear, the firm emphasized its commitment to finding a solution that protects the financial interests of its residents.

What this means for Floridians

For the Florida residents involved, the situation underscores the risks of long‑term, prepaid residential cruise contracts, especially when external factors such as fuel price volatility can dramatically alter a company’s cost structure. Consumer advocates have warned that such contracts often lack clear protections for buyers when a provider faces financial strain.

As the restructuring proceeds, Floridians who have invested in similar residency programs are advised to review their contracts carefully, monitor company communications, and consider seeking legal counsel if they feel their rights are being compromised.

Local officials in Florida have not yet commented on the incident, but the case may prompt state consumer‑protection agencies to examine the regulatory framework governing residential cruise agreements.
