Flávio Bolsonaro Arrives in Miami After Brazil Election Defeat, Trump Welcomes Him

Miami welcomed a high‑profile political visitor on Wednesday when Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated Brazilian Senate candidate, landed at Opa‑Locka Executive Airport with his wife and two daughters. The Bolsonaro family had fled Brazil after refusing to concede the runoff election that re‑elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

From Brazil to Argentina to Ecuador, then to the United States

Argentina’s migration authority confirmed that the Bolsonaros crossed the Tancredo Neves International Bridge into Misiones Province at 10:50 p.m. local time, presenting valid travel documents. Shortly after clearing immigration, they boarded a private charter operated by Baires Fly S.A. and flew to Guayaquil, Ecuador, before the aircraft was recorded landing in Miami early Thursday morning.

Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered Flávio Bolsonaro to surrender his Brazilian passports on the day he lost the election. While it is unclear whether he complied, allies reported that he also holds an Italian passport, which may have facilitated his travel.

Trump’s Open‑Armed Welcome

President Donald Trump, who remains in office, publicly endorsed the Bolsonaro family’s arrival. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews after a campaign stop in Texas, Trump said the family were “fine people” and expressed support for their safety in the United States. He did not comment on the legitimacy of Brazil’s election results, noting only that the election was “really strange” and “terrible.”

Trump’s endorsement aligns with his longstanding relationship with the Bolsonaro political brand. Flávio Bolsonaro visited the White House in May, and his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, also sought refuge in Florida after his 2022 defeat.

Brazilian Reactions

President Lula, who turned 81 on Tuesday, addressed the situation in a brief remarks to supporters outside the presidential palace in Brasília. He said he regretted Bolsonaro’s departure, stating, “I regret that he left Brazil, because he could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true.” Lula labeled the flight “shameful.”

Close Bolsonaro ally Paulo Figueiredo, who resides in the United States, said the family is “well, in security and resting with his family,” and announced a press conference in Miami for Thursday to discuss the case.

Legal Cloud Over Flávio Bolsonaro

Flávio Bolsonaro remains under investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court for alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion in two separate cases. One probe alleges he used a sports‑betting company to launder fraudulent deductions from government pensions paid to senior citizens; another accuses him of receiving millions of dollars from a disgraced banker.

His eight‑year Senate term expires on January 31, 2027, at which point he will lose the special jurisdiction he enjoys before the Supreme Court.

Potential Diplomatic Ripple

The rapid departure and U.S. visa approval for the Bolsonaros could strain relations between Brazil’s newly re‑elected Lula administration and Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a known Trump ally who recently traveled to Brazil to support Bolsonaro’s campaign.

Argentina’s migration authority emphasized that the Bolsonaros entered the country without legal impediments, and Milei’s spokesperson, Adrián Ravier, confirmed there is no asylum request pending.

What This Means for Miami

While the Bolsonaro family’s presence in Miami is short‑term, local officials are monitoring the situation for any security or diplomatic implications. The arrival underscores Miami’s role as a gateway for international political figures seeking refuge or a platform in the United States.
