Community Mural Nears Completion in McRae Park, Salem

McRae Park in northeast Salem is about to receive a vibrant new mural, the result of a collaborative art effort that has drawn almost 70 community members of all ages. The project, led by local artist and longtime neighborhood resident Lynn Takata, is in its final stages and is slated to be completed before Halloween.

Participatory art brings neighbors together

Takata, who has overseen more than 300 participatory art projects across four states, believes the process itself is as important as the finished piece. “I believe in the process of participatory art because it can bring people together,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to share that artistic process.”

Anyone who wanted to help could join, whether they were a professional painter or had never held a brush. Takata provided guidance on preparation, drawing, and painting, working with participants ranging from two‑year‑olds to 81‑year‑olds.

Celebrating the Willamette Valley’s natural heritage

The mural’s theme showcases the native flora and fauna of the mid‑Willamette Valley. Species depicted include a raccoon, a deer, several bird species such as the slender‑billed, white‑breasted nuthatch, butterflies, acorns, and a variety of local flowers. “We’re trying to cover a wide variety of species,” Takata explained, adding that a future brochure may provide more information about the creatures featured.

University students also contributed. Biology classes taught by Willamette University professor David Craig joined the effort, painting native birds they had studied in the classroom. Local artists Marnie Jeffers and Janita James added their own touches, further enriching the community feel of the work.

Neighbors share why the mural matters

Alex Myhre, a resident who painted alongside her four‑year‑old daughter, described the mural as a source of pride for the neighborhood. “Murals are a really great way for the community to take pride in itself,” she said. Myhre praised Takata for making the experience accessible to children, noting that many mothers appreciated the inclusive approach.

Takata sees the mural as a gift to her neighbors. “People are happy,” she told the Salem Reporter. “They’re telling me it’s magical.” The positive reception reflects the project’s success in fostering connection and education through art.

Support and funding

The Northeast Neighbors Neighborhood Association sponsored the mural, while the Salem Park Improvement Fund and Salem Parks Foundation provided grant funding. Rodda‑Miller Paint, a local paint supplier in south Salem, donated the paint used for the two‑week painting period.

As the community adds the final brushstrokes, the mural will stand as a lasting reminder of what can be achieved when neighbors come together to celebrate their shared environment and heritage.
