Lunch Hour at Big Whiskey’s Neighbor: Try Bruno’s Little Italy

Around ten on a Tuesday night, Midtown Billiards is just getting started. That might sound like a warning, but if you know the place, it’s an invitation. This is one of the few spots in Little Rock where the lights stay low, the tables stay busy, and nobody’s trying too hard to make it feel like an event. It just is one.

Midtown Billiards sits on Kavanaugh Boulevard in the Heights, which is a strange block for a pool hall — surrounded by boutiques and brunch spots — but somehow it fits. The building doesn’t announce itself. Walk in and your eyes adjust to the dim: a long bar along one wall, several well-maintained pool tables stretched across the floor, and a jukebox that actually gets used. The carpet has seen better decades. That’s a feature, not a flaw.

I’ve been coming here off and on for years, usually after dinner somewhere nearby when nobody’s ready to call it a night. The bar pours honest drinks at honest prices — you’re looking at around six to eight dollars for most cocktails, less for domestic drafts. Nobody’s going to upsell you on a craft flight or a specialty garnish. You order what you want, tip well, and go back to your game.

Speaking of the games: table time runs roughly eight to ten dollars an hour depending on when you show up and how many people you’ve got. Weeknights before ten are your best bet if you actually want to play. Weekends, especially after eleven, it fills up fast and you might wait. Bring quarters for the jukebox — it accepts them, and whoever controls the music controls the room.

The crowd is genuinely mixed. On any given night you’ll find regulars who’ve been shooting here since the nineties, college students from nearby UALR or Hendrix, and people who just wandered in because they saw the sign. It doesn’t sort itself into cliques the way a lot of bars do. Part of that is the pool itself — a game has a way of introducing strangers.

There’s a small food menu, mostly bar snacks, nothing that’s going to compete with anything on this city’s restaurant scene. But that’s not the point. If you’re hungry, eat before you come. If you want something to pick at while you run the table, the nachos will do the job.

Hours run until the early morning on weekends, which puts Midtown Billiards in a specific and useful category: the place you go when everywhere else has closed. It’s also a reasonable choice for a low-key date, a group of four with nothing planned, or just a solo Tuesday when you want to be around people without having to talk to them much.

Parking is street parking on Kavanaugh or the side streets, which is rarely a problem on weeknights and occasionally annoying on weekends. It’s worth the lap around the block.

Midtown Billiards isn’t trying to be a destination. That’s exactly why it keeps working.
