In an exclusive interview, Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader said the city’s crime statistics are trending downward, indicating a safer environment for residents despite recent fatal shootings.
Numbers show a decline
Rader pointed to the latest crime data, noting that overall incidents have decreased since he assumed command a little over a year ago. “If we’re looking at the numbers, yes, our crime numbers are down. I think the city is safer,” he said.
The chief emphasized that the department’s expanded patrol presence has been a major contributor to the improvement. Officers are now more visible in neighborhoods, which he believes deters criminal activity and reassures citizens.
Community partnership is essential
Rader stressed that policing is a shared responsibility. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. “If something doesn’t look right, call,” he advised, adding that a proactive call can prevent a potential crime before it occurs.
The chief explained that he prefers officers respond to a call and find no crime rather than a situation where a lack of reporting leads to victimization. This collaborative approach, he said, helps maintain the downward trend.
Addressing domestic violence concerns
The recent double‑fatal shooting, which police linked to a domestic dispute, has drawn attention to hidden violence within homes. Rader acknowledged the tragedy and used the moment to highlight the department’s ongoing efforts to combat domestic abuse, encouraging victims and witnesses to reach out for help.
He noted that the department works closely with local shelters and advocacy groups to provide resources and support for those affected by domestic violence.
Looking ahead
Chief Rader expressed optimism about continuing the positive momentum. He credited the dedication of the men and women of the Henderson Police Department and the cooperation of the community for the progress made so far.
“The majority of the work is being done by the great men and women, the brave heroes that we have on the Henderson Police Department,” Rader said. “I’m very fortunate that we have been able to really have an impact on the quality of life for our residents and being able to reduce crime.”
As Henderson moves forward, the partnership between law enforcement and citizens will remain a cornerstone of the city’s strategy to keep neighborhoods safe and secure.
