Henderson animal control traps, spays and releases abandoned cats

During a Tuesday fiscal court meeting, Henderson animal control officers briefed local officials on the recent rescue of cats abandoned at a residence on East Kingsway Court. The department confirmed that the felines were humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, ear‑tipped for identification, and then released to roam the area.

How the operation unfolded

According to the animal control team, the cats were discovered after neighbors reported a growing number of stray animals congregating near the property. Officers responded by setting live traps, a standard practice that minimizes stress on the animals while ensuring they can be safely captured.

Once trapped, each cat was taken to the city’s veterinary facility where they received a full spay or neuter procedure. The city’s veterinarian also performed ear‑tipping, a small, painless clip on the cat’s ear that signals the animal has been sterilized and is part of a statewide humane‑society program.

Why the city acted

Henderson’s animal control division emphasized that trapping, sterilizing and releasing (often called TNR) is a proven method for managing feral cat populations. By preventing further breeding, the city aims to reduce the number of stray cats over time, lessen the burden on shelters, and protect local wildlife.

“Our goal is to address the issue responsibly and compassionately,” said a spokesperson for the department. “These cats will now be part of a managed colony, and the ear‑tip lets us track the success of the program.”

Community response

Residents who had previously voiced concern about the abandoned cats expressed relief that the city took swift action. Some neighbors noted that the cats had been a nuisance, while others appreciated the humane approach.

The fiscal court members thanked the animal control staff for their diligence and asked the department to continue monitoring the colony. They also discussed potential outreach to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying and neutering pets.

What’s next

The city plans to keep an eye on the released cats to ensure they remain healthy and do not become a larger problem. Animal control will also continue to respond to any new reports of abandoned animals, applying the same TNR protocol when appropriate.
