Sununu Defends Social Security Record as Pappas, Shaheen Attack Privatization Plans

During a campaign stop in Conway, New Hampshire, Republican Senate candidate John E. Sununu responded forcefully to accusations from Democrat Chris Pappas and incumbent Sen. Jeanne Shaheen that he supports privatizing Social Security. The three candidates shared a press conference, but Sununu’s team quickly issued a statement to set the record straight.

Sununu’s Record on Social Security

Sununu’s campaign spokesperson said, “John Sununu has never voted to reduce Social Security benefits, and he never will.” The statement highlighted Sununu’s voting history, noting that while he authored legislation in the Senate to create personal investment accounts within the system, the bill never advanced and did not threaten existing benefits. The spokesperson added that Sununu’s opponents are “recycling the same false attacks because they have no accomplishments to show for their eight years in office.”

Pappas and Shaheen’s Criticism

At the same event, Pappas and Shaheen warned voters that Sununu’s past proposals could lead to a shift toward private accounts, which they described as a step toward dismantling the Social Security safety net. Shaheen said, “The idea that he’s got a plan for Social Security and he won’t tell the New Hampshire public what that plan is, is the height of arrogance – that he’s not willing to tell voters what he wants to do.” The criticism focused on Sununu’s refusal to present a detailed Social Security plan for the current campaign.

Sununu’s Campaign Stance

Sununu has said he will not put forth a new Social Security plan during this election cycle, arguing that the existing system already provides a solid foundation for retirees. He contended that the push to privatize the program would jeopardize the guaranteed benefits that millions of New Hampshire families rely on. By emphasizing his consistent opposition to benefit cuts, Sununu aims to reassure voters that his priority is protecting the program’s core.

Context for Voters

The debate comes as New Hampshire voters weigh choices for the U.S. Senate seat. While Pappas and Shaheen focus on the perceived risk of privatization, Sununu’s campaign is positioning the candidate as a defender of the current Social Security structure. The contrast underscores a broader partisan divide over how to preserve the program’s solvency without compromising benefits.

What This Means for the Race

Sununu’s rapid response seeks to shift the narrative from speculation about future policy to a concrete record of voting behavior. By foregrounding his opposition to benefit reductions, the campaign hopes to neutralize the criticism and appeal to older voters who prioritize Social Security security. The upcoming primary and general election will test whether these arguments resonate with New Hampshire’s electorate.
