Buffalo, N.Y. – Dr. Ebony Prohet Bullock, the interim superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools, used Breast Cancer Awareness Month to share her personal battle with breast cancer, offering hope and practical advice to the community.
From Diagnosis to Determination
Bullock was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in June 2023. After doctors discovered multiple lesions and lymph‑node involvement, her diagnosis was upgraded to stage 3 following surgery. Despite the aggressive treatment plan—including a lumpectomy in August 2023, radiation beginning in October, and chemotherapy—she remained focused on completing her doctorate and supporting her family.
Family, Faith, and Leadership
“My goal was simply to live… to survive, live for my three children and husband,” Bullock said, highlighting how her husband and three children have been a constant source of motivation. She explained that the experience has deepened her empathy as a leader, making her more attentive to the needs of educators, students, and families across the district.
Message for the Community
During the awareness month, Bullock urged Buffalo residents not to let fear deter them from screening or medical care. She praised advances in treatment and technology, noting that “breast cancer is survivable” and encouraging early detection as a key to better outcomes.
She also emphasized that a cancer diagnosis does not diminish a person’s identity. “They are still intelligent, wonderful, and have that magic,” she said, urging coworkers and loved ones to treat patients with the same respect and dignity they always had.
Looking Ahead
While her cancer is now undetectable, Bullock continues regular testing and follow‑up care. She remains hopeful, stating, “We are striving for those five years, and I know I will be just fine.” Her story aims to inspire others facing similar challenges and to reinforce the importance of community support.
By sharing her journey, Dr. Bullock hopes to encourage Buffalonians to prioritize breast health, seek medical guidance promptly, and support loved ones navigating the disease.
