New Hampton River Bridge Opens, Easing Traffic for Seacoast Residents

Seacoast communities celebrated the opening of the new Hampton River Bridge on Tuesday, marking the completion of a $107 million project designed to improve traffic flow along one of the region’s busiest corridors. The bridge, which connects the towns of Hampton and Seabrook, was officially inaugurated with a ribbon‑cutting ceremony before the first public crossing scheduled for Wednesday.

Key Features of the New Bridge

According to Denis Switzer, a contract administrator with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, the structure is 1,320 feet long and sits about 48 feet above the water, providing ample clearance for marine traffic. “The bridge is 25 feet higher than the old drawbridge, so there’s no need for the bridge to open for boats,” Switzer explained. “Boats can now pass freely underneath, meaning drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will no longer face traffic delays waiting for a bridge to close.”

The modern span includes four scenic lookouts, offering pedestrians and cyclists opportunities to pause and enjoy views of the river and surrounding coastline. “There are some really nice views,” Switzer added, noting that the lookouts were a deliberate design element to encourage active transportation and community enjoyment of the waterfront.

Community Celebration

The ceremony featured residents who won a raffle hosted by the Hampton Police Department, an effort that raised funds to house an antique firetruck. Among the participants was Eleanor McGuirk, proprietor of McGuirk’s Oceanview, whose family expressed pride in the project’s completion. “This bridge, as far as I’m concerned, metaphorically, it’s big, big – it’s similar to her,” said Arnold McGuirk, referencing his wife’s dedication to the community. “It’s brought so many values of hard work to our family, and I’m very, very proud to be part of today’s festivities.”

Local residents also shared personal reflections on watching the bridge rise over the past months. “It was fun watching the progress, especially from the beach view in Seabrook,” said Richard Cadrin. “It was surprisingly beautiful as it went up.”

Impact on Transportation and Safety

By eliminating the drawbridge, the new structure is expected to reduce congestion during peak travel times and improve emergency‑vehicle response across the river. The higher clearance also enhances safety for both marine and road users, removing the risk of collisions associated with bridge openings.

State officials highlighted the bridge as a critical component of the region’s broader transportation plan, which aims to support economic growth, tourism, and the daily commutes of thousands of residents. The project’s completion comes as New Hampshire continues to invest in infrastructure that balances modern needs with the preservation of its scenic coastal character.

Looking Ahead

With the bridge now open, local leaders anticipate increased activity at nearby businesses and recreational areas. The four lookouts are expected to become popular spots for families, joggers, and cyclists seeking a pleasant break from their routes.

Switzer, who has built 27 bridges over his career, noted that the Hampton River Bridge will be his final project before retirement. “It’s a fitting way to finish my career, knowing this bridge will serve the community for generations,” he said.

The new bridge stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit of Hampton and Seabrook, reflecting the region’s commitment to reliable transportation, family‑friendly amenities, and the preservation of its coastal heritage.
