Clearwater County, Idaho – On Monday night, Clearwater County sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 12 around 10:09 p.m. after observing a moving‑violation involving a vehicle with a white rear light. The deputy who made the stop reported seeing drug paraphernalia in plain view, prompting an immediate investigation.
Evidence of drug trafficking uncovered
Further inspection revealed that the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended license and was in possession of marijuana. More significantly, deputies seized 83 grams of a substance that tested preliminarily positive for a dangerous combination of methamphetamine and fentanyl. In addition to the controlled substances, officers recovered two firearms and approximately $3,000 in cash from the vehicle.
Sheriff’s Office emphasizes public safety
The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office described the quantity and nature of the seized drugs as consistent with drug‑trafficking activity. “The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to keeping our roadways safe and addressing illegal drug activity in our community,” the agency said in its release.
Sheriff John Smith also used the opportunity to thank his deputies for their dedication. “As Sheriff, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank our deputies for the hard work and dedication they put into serving Clearwater County. Law enforcement is not always easy, particularly in a small county where resources can be limited, and our deputies are often called upon to wear many hats. Despite those challenges, they continue to show up, do their jobs, and work to keep our communities safe,” Smith wrote.
Impact on the community
This bust highlights the ongoing effort by local law‑enforcement to combat the influx of powerful synthetic opioids and methamphetamine that threaten Idaho’s families and neighborhoods. By intercepting the drugs before they could be distributed, deputies helped protect residents from the devastating health and social consequences associated with these substances.
Clearwater County officials encourage anyone who observes suspicious activity or suspects illegal drug use to contact the sheriff’s office promptly. The department continues to prioritize proactive patrols and community outreach to maintain a safe environment for all residents.
