Midwest sees first net domestic migration gain of the decade, adding 16,000 residents

Recent Census Bureau estimates show the Midwest turned a corner in population movement. After years of losing residents, the region posted a net domestic migration gain of 16,000 people in the year ending June 2025 – the first positive figure of the decade.

State‑by‑state snapshot

Eight of the twelve Midwestern states reported net gains. Ohio moved from a loss of more than 32,000 in 2021 to a gain of nearly 12,000 in 2025. Michigan reversed a 28,290‑person decline to a modest 1,796 increase. Minnesota and Wisconsin together shifted from a combined loss of 33,269 in 2021 to a combined gain of 15,284 by 2025.

Illinois remains an outlier, losing 108,364 residents in 2021, 149,904 in 2022, and still down 40,017 in 2025, which skews the regional picture.

Where newcomers are coming from

According to the 2024 American Community Survey, the bulk of arrivals originated in the South. Florida, Texas and California together accounted for just under half of the 604,826 arrivals from all 15 states surveyed. Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and Oklahoma contributed a further 328,314 movers, while the West and Northeast supplied far fewer.

Why the Midwest is attracting movers

Three explanations dominate the analysis:

  • Job‑centered growth: Some states, such as Missouri, posted strong employment gains (1.7% in 2025) alongside sizable population inflows. Other states, like Indiana, saw less direct correlation, suggesting jobs are only part of the story.
  • Housing affordability: The National Association of Realtors reported a median single‑family home price of $317,100 in the Midwest in Q4 2025, far below the West’s $625,800 and the Northeast’s $514,600. Lower costs appear to be a major draw for families seeking affordable homeownership.
  • Hybrid recovery: Nationwide interstate migration slowed, meaning fewer Midwesterners left. The reduced outflow helped tip the net balance into positive territory.

Urban versus suburban trends

Large‑metro counties across the nation lost 668,000 people in 2025, while smaller metros and suburbs gained. In the Midwest, smaller metro counties added 31,000 residents. Indianapolis recorded the largest city‑level gain in Indiana (4,613), and Columbus, Ohio, joined only two other metros in adding more than 100,000 residents since the decade began.

Looking ahead

The Midwest’s modest gain does not signal a boom, but it does mark the end of a long period of decline. Continued affordability and steady job creation will be crucial to sustaining the trend. The next Census Bureau release will clarify whether 2025 was an anomaly or the start of a lasting reversal.
