Christian Mitchell touts statewide experience and rural outreach as Pritzker’s lieutenant governor pick

Springfield, Ill. – Voters this week will decide whether Christian Mitchell, the Democratic running mate of Governor JB Pritzker, becomes Illinois’ next lieutenant governor. Mitchell, a longtime deputy in the governor’s office, argues his blend of city roots and rural connections makes him “not your average Chicago politician.”

Deputy‑governor experience

Mitchell clarified to WTAX Morning Newswatch that the titles “deputy governor” and “lieutenant governor” refer to distinct roles. “Deputy governor is a high‑level appointed staff position,” he explained. “There are four in Illinois under Governor Pritzker: one for education, one for health and human services, one for budget and economy, and I had…energy, infrastructure, and public safety. You’re really doing the day‑to‑day work, working with agencies, going to meetings, developing policy, that sort of thing.”

Plans for a more public role

If elected, Mitchell says he would shift from behind‑the‑scenes staff work to a more visible, public‑facing position. He would chair the state’s Rural Affairs Council, a post that would let him advocate directly for the needs of small towns and farming communities while still supporting the governor’s agenda.

Rural outreach and personal background

Although Mitchell lives on Chicago’s south side, he spends considerable time in Central Illinois. “I’m in Peoria, basically, every month. I’m a member of the Air National Guard, so I spend a lot of time in Central Illinois,” he said. He also highlighted his family ties to the South, noting that his mother’s side hails from Sparta, Tennessee, a community where hunting and moonshining were part of everyday life. “I grew up around folks who were shooting guns. I had cousins who bottled moonshine in the mountains of Tennessee,” Mitchell recalled, emphasizing that the moonshine was legal.

Commitment to service

Mitchell pledged that, should he win, he would continue serving in the Air National Guard, describing the commitment as “important to me.” He framed this service as an example of the personal responsibility and patriotism he hopes to bring to the lieutenant‑governor’s office.

Campaign dynamics

The Pritzker‑Mitchell ticket has faced criticism from Republican challengers Darren Bailey and Collin Corbett, who have made time for interviews with the outlet. The governor’s campaign, however, declined to comment directly, offering Mitchell as the spokesperson instead.

What voters should know

Mitchell’s profile blends executive experience, military service, and a willingness to travel across the state. For voters seeking a lieutenant governor who can bridge the urban‑rural divide, his message centers on practical governance, rural advocacy, and continued public‑service dedication.
