Pelican Brewing Pours Something Worth Staying For

Late Friday afternoon, when the light off Tampa Bay goes sideways gold and everyone in the Grand Central District seems to be deciding where to land, Pelican Brewing on Central Avenue fills up fast. I was there by five-thirty and barely got a seat at the bar, which told me everything I needed to know about whether the place had earned its neighborhood foothold.

First reason to go: the beer is genuinely good, not just good for the address. Pelican rotates its taps aggressively, so the lineup shifts, but I’ve consistently found something worth lingering over. The Blonde is the easy crowd-pleaser — crisp, not watery, light enough to survive a Florida summer afternoon. The IPAs tend toward the hazy, tropical side, which makes sense geographically, and they don’t overdo the bitterness. If something seasonal is on, order it. Last time I was in, there was a mango wheat that I thought about for days afterward. A pint runs about seven or eight dollars, which is fair for the quality.

Second reason: the space itself has an easy, lived-in quality that a lot of newer St. Pete breweries still haven’t figured out. It’s not precious. There are high tops, a bar that actually faces the room, some outdoor seating on the sidewalk that fills up whether or not the weather cooperates. The walls are covered in local artwork that rotates, and nobody is making a big deal about it — it’s just there, the way art should be in a neighborhood bar. The staff is direct and friendly without performing friendliness, which I appreciate more than I probably should.

Third reason, and this one matters if you’re going with a group: the food is a serious step above bar snacks. Pelican does a pretzel situation that I cannot explain my attachment to, and their flatbreads are the kind of thing you order thinking you’ll split it and end up eating three-quarters of yourself. Nothing on the menu is trying to be a restaurant dish; it’s calibrated to beer, which is exactly right. Figure fifteen to twenty dollars if you eat something, more if you’re splitting a few things.

The neighborhood context is worth mentioning. Grand Central has been shifting for years — some blocks feel scrubbed, some still have the original grit — and Pelican sits in the middle of that without picking a side. It draws the after-work crowd, the weekend-errand crowd, people who live within walking distance and people who drove across town. I’ve been there on a Tuesday when it felt like a small, quiet locals bar, and I’ve been there on a Saturday when I needed to raise my voice to order. Both versions work.

If you’re going for the first time, aim for a weekday early evening. The bartenders have more time to talk you through what’s on tap, the noise level lets you actually have a conversation, and you’ll have a better shot at the outdoor seats before the dinner crowd claims them. Take Central Avenue west from downtown past the coffee shops and vintage stores until you hit the block — you’ll recognize Pelican by the sign and the bicycles locked out front.

It doesn’t announce itself as anything other than what it is: a neighborhood brewery that brews decent beer and keeps the lights on because people keep coming back. In St. Pete, that’s not a small thing.
