The Goat at Cementland? No. Try Earthbound Beer

It was about six on a Wednesday evening when I pulled into the gravel lot on North 14th Street, and the first thing I noticed was the building itself — a converted warehouse with painted brick and a loading dock that still looks like it could handle a freight delivery. Inside, the ceilings climb up thirty feet or so, the kind of industrial space that usually gets turned into condos or a coworking office. Instead, Earthbound Beer left most of it alone and just set up some long tables, poured some concrete, and started making interesting beer.

Earthbound opened in 2014 in Old North St. Louis, a neighborhood that was working hard to come back to itself, and the brewery has been part of that effort without making a big show of it. The spot doesn’t feel curated for Instagram. The bar is functional and comfortable. There’s usually a mix of neighborhood regulars, cyclists who came in off the Cass Avenue corridor, and people who drove from the suburbs because somebody told them to.

The beer is where Earthbound earns its reputation. They’re not a taproom that’s mostly one flagship lager and a few mediocre seasonals. Head brewer and co-founder Henry Walker has an actual point of view, and you can taste it. Their saisons tend to be dry and expressive, not the honeyed versions that pass for farmhouse ales at a lot of places. The sour program is serious — tart, complex, built on mixed fermentation rather than just a squirt of lactic acid. On a recent visit I worked through a sour cherry Berliner that had enough tartness to make you wince on the first sip and then keep going back. They do a rotating wild ale series that’s worth asking about at the bar.

If you’re with someone who doesn’t want a sour, there are usually a few balanced options — a well-made pale ale, a session beer, something approachable. The tap list changes often enough that it’s worth checking their site or social channels before you go, though I’ve never walked in and been disappointed by what was available.

Food here is simple: a rotating selection of snacks, sandwiches, or small plates depending on the day. It’s not a full kitchen situation, and they’re upfront about that. A few times they’ve had a pop-up or a food truck working the lot outside, which helps when you’re planning to stay a while. Prices are reasonable — most pints run between five and seven dollars, and a flight of four comes in around ten. Nothing feels padded out for tourists.

Old North STL isn’t where most people instinctively think to go on a night out in the city, and that’s exactly why Earthbound has the feel it does. The Crown Square area nearby has been developing slowly and carefully, and Earthbound has stayed rooted to the block rather than chasing a more prominent address. It still feels local in a way that a lot of breweries in trendier zip codes have lost.

If you go, give yourself time to sit. The space rewards it. Get a flight first so you can figure out what you actually want, then commit to a full pour of the best sour on the board. Go on a weeknight if you want elbow room; weekends get louder and busier. Street parking is usually available on 14th or nearby. It’s the kind of place that’s easy to visit once and then find yourself going back to without quite planning on it.
