Good Night Lights shines hope for Shriners Children’s Hospital patients in Philadelphia

Philadelphia – On Monday night, first‑responders and local volunteers gathered outside Shriners Children’s Hospital in North Philadelphia for the ninth annual “Good Night Lights” celebration. The event turned emergency lights and sirens into symbols of encouragement, as police, firefighters and community members lined Broad Street, waving flashlights and shining beacon‑like beams toward children watching from inside the hospital.

First‑responders lead the way

Philadelphia Police Sergeant Michael Cerruti greeted the crowd, saying, “Listen, we’re here for ya.” The police department, along with the Philadelphia Fire Department – participating for the first time – closed a short stretch of Broad Street between Tioga and Venango streets to allow the gathering. A helicopter from Chopper 6 circled overhead, adding to the festive atmosphere as families inside the hospital waved back.

Community voices emphasize compassion

“You don’t realize what a blessing it is to have healthy children; not everybody has that,” said Christina Aristoklis of Malvern, a volunteer with the Michael Archangel Ministry, a program of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 that helped organize the event. Aristoklis added, “We should support people who aren’t as fortunate.”

Monica Hill, a North Philadelphia resident, echoed the sentiment, noting that the children at Shriners rarely get chances to leave the hospital. “The children that are in Shriners, they don’t get to come out a lot, so to see this, it’s beautiful,” she said.

Honoring fallen heroes

The gathering came after a brief postponement the previous week, when the Philadelphia Police Department prepared for the funeral of Sergeant Shane Sieber, who was killed in the line of duty during a West Philadelphia shooting earlier this month. The tragedy also left Officer Hector Rodriguez seriously wounded. Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said the event was uplifting for first‑responders as well, describing it as “an uplifting type of event for us as well.”

Broad support from surrounding counties

In addition to city agencies, Pennsylvania State Police and law‑enforcement officers from Montgomery and Bucks counties joined the celebration, underscoring the regional commitment to the children and families served by Shriners. Organizers emphasized that the lights were meant to remind both patients and first‑responders that they are not alone in their challenges.

Why the event matters

Good Night Lights provides a rare moment of joy for children undergoing treatment for burns, orthopedic conditions and other serious injuries. By turning the symbols of emergency response into beacons of hope, the event reinforces the bond between the community’s protectors and its most vulnerable members. As Sergeant Cerruti put it, “We want to let them know we’re there for them every step of their challenge, and they’re letting us know that they’re with us as well.”

The tradition, now in its ninth year, continues to grow each October, drawing more volunteers and expanding its reach across the city and surrounding counties. For families facing long hospital stays, the lights serve as a reminder that the broader Philadelphia community stands ready to support them.

Local faith groups, civic organizations and businesses have also contributed resources, ensuring that the event remains a collaborative effort rooted in shared values of compassion, family support and community service.

As the lights dimmed and the night drew to a close, the message was clear: Philadelphia’s first‑responders, volunteers and neighbors are united in their commitment to lift up the children at Shriners Children’s Hospital, offering hope and encouragement for the challenges ahead.
