Sandy’s New Utah Mammoth Training Center Drives Business to Local Pub

When the Utah Mammoth announced a professional hockey presence in the state, Sandy officials and local entrepreneurs saw an opportunity for community growth. The new Mammoth Ice Center, which opened on Feb. 20, has quickly become a hub for players, families, and fans, and nearby businesses are feeling the ripple effect.

Local restaurant sees steady crowds

Legends Pub & Grill Southtown, a longtime family‑owned eatery just across the street from the ice center, reports a noticeable uptick in patronage. “It’s a wonderful part of our neighborhood to have that there and the access and what it generates for us,” said Brooks Mandryk, who helps run the restaurant. As a hockey fan himself, Mandryk called the arrival of a professional team and its practice facility a “dream come true.”

Mandryk explained that the biggest surge comes when youth hockey teams arrive for games, practices, and tournaments. “One thing we really succeed at is those large groups, taking care of those youth teams. We get them in, we get them out,” he said. He noted that it’s common to see groups of 20‑25 people, with parents gathered at one table and players at another. “So it’s good for business? Absolutely,” he added.

Mayor highlights regional impact

Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski echoed the sentiment, telling FOX 13 News that the facility is drawing visitors from throughout the region, which benefits local merchants. “People are coming to the practice facility from throughout the region, and that’s great for businesses in Sandy,” she said.

Ice center offers programs for all ages

Beyond serving the professional team, the Mammoth Ice Center is committed to community access. Kristen Bowness, director of youth hockey and amateur strategy for Smith Entertainment Group, said the goal is to make the ice available whenever the pro team isn’t using it. “Honestly, if you want to play hockey, we want to find a spot for you,” she said.

Since opening, the center reports 900 participants in its learn‑to‑skate program, 300 children in an introductory Rookie League, and 70 adult league teams. Programs also include public skating, clinics, camps, girls’ hockey events, and opportunities for players of varying ages and skill levels. Bowness highlighted that the center welcomes everyone from three‑year‑old beginners to an 89‑year‑old adult league participant.

Economic boost extends beyond the rink

For nearby establishments like Legends Pub & Grill, the influx of skaters and their families translates into more diners, higher sales, and a stronger sense of community. The partnership between the ice center and local businesses illustrates how sports facilities can serve as economic engines for small towns.
