Lexington – The Rhema Word Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping families affected by domestic violence, announced the opening of a new safe‑housing program for women and children. The initiative adds a critical resource for survivors who often have nowhere to turn after fleeing abusive situations.
Providing a refuge and a path forward
Executive Director Kivva Greenlee‑Williams explained that the shelter will offer residents up to two years of stable housing. During that time, participants receive life‑skill training, assistance with school enrollment, resume building and other services designed to help them rebuild their lives.
“We teach them how to recognize the person they were and who they’re going to be, and put them on the right path,” Greenlee‑Williams said. “The ultimate goal is to provide shelter for women who have nowhere to go when they’re put out in the middle of the night or they’re running.”
A personal mission turned community service
The foundation’s work is rooted in Greenlee‑Williams’ own tragedy. In 2004 she lost her young daughter, Aramah, to domestic violence. After reconciling with Aramah’s father, the couple married and founded the Rhema Word Foundation in her memory.
“Aramah’s father and I decided to reunite and we started a relationship, got married, and started Rhema Word Foundation in her honor,” Greenlee‑Williams said.
Encouraging families to trust their instincts
Greenlee‑Williams urges parents to listen to their intuition when something feels off. She advises seeking a second opinion from a pediatrician or trusted professional if concerns arise about a child’s safety.
“Listen to your women’s intuition. Listen to that gut feeling,” she said. “If you do suspect it, just get an opinion. Take your child to the pediatrician and get a second opinion on what you may be feeling.”
How to get help or get involved
Rhema Word Foundation emphasizes that help is readily available. Those in need can contact the organization directly, and community members are welcome to volunteer.
“Help is readily available. We’re here. Rhema Word Foundation is here to help,” Greenlee‑Williams said.
