Michigan football’s elite defense can’t hide a struggling offense

Michigan’s football program entered the 2026 season with high hopes, anchored by a defense that many analysts still rank among the nation’s best. Yet the Wolverines’ offense has sputtered to a historic low, leaving the team far from the playoff picture after a 13‑6 home loss to Indiana.

Defensive excellence remains a bright spot

Under head coach Kyle Whittingham, Michigan’s defense continues to dominate. The unit leads the nation in yards allowed per play and consistently shuts down opponents, a performance that mirrors the 2023 championship squad. Defensive standouts have kept the Wolverines competitive in games where the offense has struggled to move the ball.

Offensive woes become a season‑long story

Unfortunately, the offensive side tells a different tale. The Wolverines rank 122nd nationally in yards per play, a stark contrast to their top‑ranked defense. The team has failed to score a touchdown on two separate drives inside the five‑yard line against Indiana, and has managed only six points in four quarters.

Quarterback play has been a major factor. True freshman Bryce Underwood, who started the season, was benched after a series of ineffective outings. His replacement, Tommy Carr, a fringe four‑star recruit, showed limited upside, scrambling for modest gains but unable to generate sustained scoring drives.

Running back Jordan Marshall, who was a key contributor last year, saw his production tumble from 11th in yards per carry nationally to 112th this season. The offensive line also suffered from turnover and injuries, and highly touted freshman Savion Hiter has yet to make an impact.

Strategic missteps on the play‑calling front

Offensive coordinator Jason Beck, who arrived with Whittingham from Utah, has persisted with an outside‑run scheme despite the Wolverines’ poor perimeter statistics: an average of 4.6 yards up the middle, 3.3 to the left, and only 2.6 to the right. This imbalance has left the offense predictable and easy for opponents to defend.

Analysts note that the gap between Michigan’s defensive and offensive rankings is one of the widest in recent college football history, comparable only to the Iowa teams coached by Kirk Ferentz in 2022 and 2023.

Looking ahead: what Michigan must do

To revive the season, the program faces several clear choices. First, a new quarterback will likely be needed for 2027, whether through the transfer portal or a higher‑rated recruit, as the current roster does not feature a viable starter. Second, a change at offensive coordinator appears necessary; Beck’s play‑calling has not produced the needed results.

Retaining the defensive core should remain a priority, as the unit provides a solid foundation for future success. Investing in a play‑caller who can balance the run game and develop a more dynamic passing attack could bring the Wolverines back into contention.

Community perspective

Ann Arbor fans, known for their passionate support of Michigan football, are understandably frustrated. While the city remains a beloved college town, the current season feels like a missed opportunity, especially given the strength of the defense and the competitive nature of the Big Ten.

With the season still underway, the Wolverines have a chance to course‑correct before the final stretch. A revitalized offense could propel Michigan back into the Big Ten championship conversation and restore the high expectations that accompany a program of this stature.
