Badger Mountain Books Closed. Elevenmile Still Bites

What do you actually do with a free afternoon at 8,500 feet when the tourist brochures have already run out of ideas? If you have a fishing rod, a camp chair, or just functional legs, Elevenmile Canyon answers that question more quietly and more honestly than most places around here.

The canyon runs south from Lake George — about 35 miles from Woodland Park down Highway 24 — and the South Platte River threads through it for roughly ten miles before opening into Elevenmile Reservoir. The Bureau of Land Management manages most of the corridor, which keeps it genuinely accessible without the parking chaos you’ll find at places with bigger names and smaller payoffs. Get there before 9 a.m. on a summer weekend if you want elbow room; by noon the pullouts fill with families who have discovered the same open secret you have.

The fishing is what draws most people, and rightly so. This stretch of the South Platte holds wild brown and rainbow trout — not the stocked, dazed variety you find in put-and-take waters, but actual fish that have opinions about your fly selection. A Colorado fishing license is required ($10/day for residents, $15 for non-residents), and certain sections are flies-and-lures-only with catch-and-release rules, so read the signage when you pull in. The river is not enormous, which works in your favor: you can wade comfortably in most sections through summer without feeling like you need a guide to interpret it.

If fishing isn’t your thing, the canyon road itself is worth the drive. The paved road transitions to gravel partway through, and the walls close in gradually until you’re threading between granite formations that look like they were stacked by someone who ran out of space. There are pullouts with short scramble paths, a few established picnic areas with vault toilets, and campgrounds spread along the corridor — Springer Gulch, Spillway, and a handful of others — that run roughly $20-28 per night depending on hookups. No reservations taken at most sites; first-come, which is either charm or frustration depending on your planning temperament.

In late September, the canyon goes golden in a way that would embarrass more famous aspen drives. The crowds thin, the air drops fifteen degrees from August, and the fish start feeding harder before winter. That’s the honest best-time-to-go answer, though most locals would prefer you didn’t know it.

There’s a day-use fee at some entry points — $3-5 cash when I last checked, though that changes periodically, so bring small bills. The canyon doesn’t have a gift shop, an interpretive center, or a café. It has a river, a road, and enough granite to make you feel adequately small without any help from a brochure. For a stretch of public land that costs nearly nothing and delivers as much as it does, that’s a fair trade by any reasonable measure.

If you’re coming from Woodland Park, take 24 west to Lake George, then turn south on County Road 92. The canyon entrance is a few miles down. Give it two hours minimum; most people stay longer than they planned.
