Mission Hills’ Best Wine Bar Flies Under the Radar

Starlite opened in 2008, which makes it older than most of the cocktail bars San Diegans treat as institutions. It occupies a standalone building on India Street in Mission Hills — not the buzzy Little Italy stretch closer to the water, but the quieter residential block north of Washington Street where the neighborhood actually lives. The name is a nod to the old Starlite motel that once stood nearby, a detail that most regulars don’t know and wouldn’t necessarily need to.

On a Thursday evening, the crowd skews toward people in their mid-thirties who arrived separately and know each other’s names. A pair of architects at the bar compare something on a phone. A woman near the window reads a paperback and nurses a glass of Burgundy without anyone bothering her. The lighting is low in the specific way that requires an actual decision — not underlit, not dim by neglect, but calibrated. Dark walnut, leather banquettes, a long bar with good stools. It reads as mid-century without leaning into the theme.

The cocktail list changes seasonally and takes itself seriously without announcing that fact in the menu copy. A recent visit turned up a mezcal sour with hibiscus and a smoked salt rim that worked because the smokiness didn’t overwhelm the citrus. The bartenders move deliberately, which some people mistake for slowness; they are not slow. Wine by the glass is a longer list than most bars this size bother with, and the markup is honest — a Côtes du Rhône blanc that runs about $14 a glass here would cost twice that with less care at a restaurant half a mile away in Little Italy.

The food menu is short and meant to accompany drinking rather than replace dinner. The cheese and charcuterie board is the obvious choice and it’s obvious for a reason: the selections rotate, the accompaniments are thought through, and the portions are sized for sharing between two people without either person feeling shorted. The roasted bone marrow shows up periodically as a special and is worth ordering on instinct if it’s available. A small plate of marinated olives costs around six dollars and comes with good bread.

What sets Starlite apart from the cocktail bars that have opened in its wake across North Park and South Park is the absence of performance. Nobody is explaining the provenance of the bitters to guests who didn’t ask. The music — generally jazz or soul, at a volume where conversation doesn’t require leaning in — is playing because someone made a real choice about it. Reservations are available on weekends and worth making; walk-ins generally find bar seating without much trouble on weeknights.

Tabs for two, with two cocktails each and a shared board, typically land between $70 and $90 before tip. Parking along India Street is free and usually findable within a block. The patio out front gets used in good weather, which in Mission Hills is most of the year. Starlite closes at midnight on weekends, later than most comparable spots in the neighborhood. It has been consistent for sixteen years, which in San Diego’s bar landscape qualifies as something close to remarkable.
