Fukuryu Ramen Does One Thing and Gets It Right

The broth arrives before you’ve fully settled into your seat. That’s not an exaggeration — the bowls at Fukuryu Ramen on Campbell Road come out fast, steaming, and with enough depth to make you understand why people drive across town for a bowl of soup. The restaurant sits in a low-key strip center on the west side of Richardson, the kind of spot you’d pass a hundred times without stopping if nobody pointed it out first.

Fukuryu specializes in tonkotsu, the pork-bone broth that requires hours of hard boiling to turn opaque and creamy. Theirs is legitimately good — rich without being heavy, with enough salt and fat to coat the noodles properly. The noodles themselves are thin and springy, the way tonkotsu noodles should be, and they hold up through the whole bowl rather than turning to mush halfway through. Order the classic Fukuryu Ramen and you get two slices of chashu pork, a soft-boiled egg, bamboo shoots, green onion, and a sheet of nori. It’s a solid baseline bowl. If you want to push further, the spicy miso is worth trying — it adds a rounded heat that doesn’t overwhelm the broth.

The extra toppings are priced reasonably. An additional egg runs about a dollar. More chashu is worth adding if you’re hungry. The base bowls land in the $13–$16 range, which is fair for the quality and portion size. They also serve a few side dishes — gyoza are standard, nothing revelatory, but fine if you want something to start.

The dining room is small, maybe thirty seats, with a bar counter along one wall where solo diners tend to park. It fills up fast on weekend evenings and during the lunch rush, particularly Friday and Saturday nights when there’s often a short wait. Your best bet for a quieter experience is a weekday lunch — the kitchen is just as sharp, the room is more relaxed, and you can actually hear yourself think. Street parking in the lot is easy at off-peak hours.

What makes Fukuryu worth returning to isn’t novelty. There’s no gimmick here, no unusual flavor combinations, no fusion detour. The menu is focused and the kitchen executes it consistently. In a stretch of Campbell Road that cycles through concepts fairly quickly, Fukuryu has built a steady following by staying in its lane. Regulars tend to know their order before they sit down, which tells you something about the repeat-visit rate.

If you’ve been eating ramen mostly at chain restaurants or food courts, this will recalibrate what you expect from a bowl. If you already know your way around tonkotsu, you’ll likely find this version competes well with anything in the Dallas metro area. Either way, plan to linger a little — the broth rewards slow eating, and there’s no rush to clear the table.

Fukuryu Ramen is open for lunch and dinner most days of the week. Check their hours before you go, as they occasionally adjust for holidays. Cash and cards both accepted.
