So You Want a Real Oyster Po’boy in Mobile

Here’s the question people actually ask when they land in Mobile for the first time and get tired of being pointed toward the same four places on Dauphin Street: where do locals eat when nobody’s watching? The answer, more often than not, involves a drive out to Springdale Mall Road, a strip-mall parking lot that does not inspire confidence, and a woman named Loretta.

Loretta’s Authentic Pralines & Restaurant has been operating in Mobile long enough that most people who love it can’t remember exactly when they started going. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need a sign refresh or a social media coordinator. The dining room is small, the tables are close together, and the laminated menu has more options on it than you’d expect — which is both a delight and a mild logistical problem if you’re hungry and indecisive.

The po’boys are the thing. Specifically, the oyster po’boy, which arrives dressed on French bread that has the right ratio of soft interior to crisp crust — a ratio many places around here get wrong. The oysters are fried to order and come out hot enough to require patience you probably don’t have. The shrimp po’boy is nearly as good and slightly easier to eat without incident. Both run in the $10–$14 range depending on size, which, for what you get, still feels like a mild oversight on Loretta’s part.

But skipping the pralines would be a mistake roughly on par with leaving New Orleans without beignets. The pralines here are the real reason the word “authentic” is in the name. They’re made on-site, sold by the counter near the register, and come in the usual pecan variety alongside a few seasonal and specialty options. They’re sweet in the way pralines should be — not aggressively so — and have that slightly grainy, buttery texture that separates a good praline from the rubbery discs that pass for them at airport gift shops. A few go for around $2–$3 each and make a perfectly reasonable dessert if you’re the type who eats dessert standing at the register while also trying to pay.

The lunch crowd moves fast and the staff keeps pace. Don’t come here expecting a leisurely two-hour experience. Come here expecting to eat well, eat quickly, and leave slightly annoyed that you didn’t order one more thing. The catfish plates draw regulars who are unmoved by any po’boy argument and have been eating the same lunch here for years. The red beans and rice, available on the right days, hold up against anything you’ll find on this side of the state line.

Go on a weekday if you can manage it. Weekend lunch crowds can back things up, and the parking lot, despite being adequate in size, has a chaotic internal logic that rewards patience. Cash is always appreciated, though cards are accepted.

Mobile has a long habit of underselling its own food culture. Loretta’s is a good example of why that habit is worth breaking.
