Northland early voting sees record turnout in Clay and Platte counties

Early voting in the Northland region of Missouri is off to a robust start, as election officials in both Clay and Platte counties report significantly higher turnout during the first days of the state’s no‑excuse absentee voting period.

Clay County records a five‑fold increase

Clay County election staff logged 5,997 voter check‑ins at its four early‑voting sites over the first two days of the period. This marks a dramatic rise from the 1,256 check‑ins recorded during the same window for the August 2026 primary. While the numbers are impressive, officials note that the early‑voting turnout still trails the volume seen in the November 2024 general election.

Platte County sees strong early participation

In neighboring Platte County, officials reported about 2,700 in‑person voters so far. The first day alone attracted nearly 900 voters, and Wednesday’s turnout topped 1,000 after polling hours were extended. Historically, Platte County has only held one other midterm election with a no‑excuse absentee voting option, which produced just under 7,000 total absentee votes.

Voters appreciate the convenience

Many residents say early voting helps them avoid potentially long lines on Election Day. Cheryl Keimig, a regular voter who usually casts her ballot at a church in Parkville, chose to try early voting this cycle. “I know I don’t have to wait in line, and I’m confident my vote will be counted,” Keimig said. She added that the higher early turnout reflects a desire among Northland voters to make their voices heard.

Betty and Charlie Pool, a retired couple who voted together early, noted that their interest in politics has grown over the years. “When we were younger, we didn’t pay attention to politics, but now we have time to be involved,” they said. The couple described the current election as an important moment for the country and expressed enthusiasm for what they called a “silver wave” of senior voters participating.

Reminder to bring photo ID

Election officials continue to remind all early voters to bring a valid photo ID to the polling sites, as required by state law. The increased early‑voting numbers suggest that many Northland residents are taking advantage of the no‑excuse absentee voting option to ensure their ballots are cast securely and conveniently.

With early voting still underway, officials anticipate that the trend of higher participation will continue, providing a clearer picture of voter sentiment ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
