Closing arguments set for Friday in Tyler capital murder sentencing of Jamaurea Britton

Tyler residents will soon learn the outcome of a high‑profile capital murder case as jurors are scheduled to hear closing arguments on Friday, deciding whether 22‑year‑old Jamaurea Jermaine Britton will be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole for the 2023 death of 18‑year‑old Dejah Hood.

According to KLTV, the sentencing phase resumed Thursday at 1:00 p.m. after a lunch recess. Both the prosecution and defense have rested their cases. The prosecution called a neuroradiologist to challenge the defense’s expert, who had suggested Britton might have suffered a brain injury. The neuroradiologist testified that the small “spots” observed on Britton’s MRI are normal for people of all ages and clinically insignificant, meaning they would not have affected his behavior.

Several personal witnesses described Britton’s background and character changes. Longtime friend Isiah Baker, who has known Britton since sixth grade and worked with him at Taco Bell, testified that he was shocked by the murder and that Britton has since expressed remorse. Baker, who is involved in local ministries, said he has shared his own faith in Christ with Britton over the phone and believes Britton has changed, though he affirmed that Britton must still answer for his actions. During cross‑examination, prosecutors introduced text messages showing Britton discussing the purchase of a firearm with Baker.

Former school officials also took the stand. An elementary school counselor recalled Britton as an unusually large, athletic fourth‑grader who was often bullied. She said she had contacted Child Protective Services during his fifth‑grade year, though she could not recall the specific reason. When asked about a note allegedly written by Britton that read, “Time to die Mrs. Roe,” the counselor said she did not remember the note but acknowledged it was possible. Tyler High School assistant principal Channing Curry, who also attended the school with both Britton and Hood, became emotional while describing the impact of the case on the school community.

Testimony from Britton’s former employer at Taco Bell highlighted his work ethic. The manager noted that Britton regularly walked to work, took extra shifts, and sought overnight hours, though she refused those because he was still in school. He later left the restaurant without notice to take a job at Home Depot.

Smith County jail staff described Britton’s behavior while incarcerated. Capt. Marvin Martin said Britton has spent time in solitary confinement, has never physically assaulted a detention officer, but recorded phone calls revealed threats toward guards. Sgt. James Lindsey testified that Britton faked a suicide attempt, during which he threatened to assault jailers but remained compliant. Detention Officer Sonya Robinson noted that Britton had earlier been written up for cursing at her, but his conduct has improved; he now serves on the inmate cleaning crew and no longer shows disrespect toward staff.

Jurors will consider all of this testimony as they deliberate on Friday. The sentencing decision will determine whether Britton receives the ultimate penalty of death or a life sentence without the possibility of parole, a conclusion that will have lasting implications for the families of both the victim and the defendant, as well as for the broader Tyler community.

What’s next: The court will reconvene at 1:00 p.m. on Friday for closing arguments. After the arguments, jurors will retire to consider a verdict, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
