Ohio governor candidates split on death penalty as Acton backs moratorium, Ramaswamy urges executions

Columbus, Ohio – The upcoming Ohio gubernatorial contest is shaping up to be a decisive moment for the state’s capital‑punishment policy. Democratic candidate Amy Acton has vowed to maintain the current moratorium on executions, whereas Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy says he would restart executions in cases involving the most serious offenses. Libertarian candidate Don Kissick and running mate James Mills also oppose the death penalty.

Current pause and Governor DeWine’s stance

Ohio has not carried out an execution since 2018. Governor Mike DeWine, who has overseen the long‑running pause, has become increasingly critical of the system, stating in June that he no longer believes the death penalty deters murder and that its moral justification has vanished. DeWine also highlighted the lengthy legal process for victims’ families and noted that a dozen death‑sentence inmates have been exonerated. He has urged lawmakers to enact a complete ban, though Republican leaders in the Ohio House have rejected that approach.

Acton’s position

Acton, a former state health director, said she would keep the moratorium in place, citing systemic problems such as a botched execution in Tennessee where an inmate reportedly survived two lethal doses. She supports life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for those convicted of heinous crimes, arguing that this ensures public safety while avoiding irreversible state‑sanctioned killing.

Ramaswamy’s proposal

Speaking at a Columbus Metropolitan Club event, Ramaswamy said he would resume executions in “rare cases involving the most egregious crimes” once the facts and legal circumstances are fully established. He urged Ohio to avoid the procedural pitfalls seen in Tennessee and to consider alternative execution methods that are ethically appropriate, scientifically sound, effective, and swift.

Libertarian opposition

Libertarian candidate Don Kissick and his running mate James Mills argue that the government should not hold the power to make an irreversible decision about a person’s life. They contend that serious crimes can be punished without resorting to execution, emphasizing accountability through life‑without‑parole sentences.

What’s at stake for voters

The disagreement places the death‑penalty debate among the key issues facing Ohio voters this fall. The next administration will decide whether the current pause continues or whether executions resume in 2027. Both sides frame their positions as protecting public safety and upholding moral standards, but they differ sharply on the role of capital punishment in achieving those goals.

Local impact

For Ohio families and communities, the outcome will affect how the state addresses the most violent crimes and how victims’ families experience the justice process. Acton’s emphasis on life‑without‑parole aligns with concerns about wrongful convictions, while Ramaswamy’s stance appeals to voters who view the death penalty as a necessary deterrent for the worst offenses.

As the campaign progresses, Ohio voters can expect further clarification from each candidate on how they would implement their respective policies, including any proposed changes to execution methods, oversight mechanisms, and support for victims’ families.
