RITBA works to restore aging decorative lighting on Sakonnet River Bridge

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced today that the decorative LED lighting system on the Sakonnet River Bridge is currently malfunctioning. The bridge, officially named the Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts Sakonnet River Bridge, connects the towns of Tiverton and Portsmouth and has displayed holiday colors and nonprofit recognitions since it opened in 2012.

Why the lights are out

Executive Director Lori Caron Silveira explained that the system is aging and that replacement parts are no longer available, making repairs especially challenging. “The system is aging, and replacement parts are no longer available, making repairs particularly challenging,” Silveira said in a statement to NBC 10 News.

Community impact

Since its installation, the lighting has become a visual reminder of local celebrations and charitable causes. In 2022, NBC 10 reported that the LED lights are used to mark holidays and recognize the work of nonprofit organizations throughout the state. “We understand how meaningful these lighting events are to the organizations and advocates who request them, and we are doing everything we can to restore the system so Rhode Islanders can continue recognizing their special causes and occasions,” Silveira added.

Next steps

RITBA officials said they are actively exploring repair options, including consulting with manufacturers to locate compatible components or consider a modern upgrade that would preserve the bridge’s tradition while ensuring long‑term reliability. The authority emphasized that the bridge’s primary function as a transportation link remains unaffected; traffic flow continues as normal while the lighting issue is addressed.

Historical context

The bridge was opened by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation in 2012 and transferred to RITBA a year later. The decorative lighting was added shortly after the transfer, quickly becoming a beloved feature for residents of both towns and the broader Rhode Island community.

What residents can expect

Silveira assured the public that updates will be communicated promptly. “We are committed to keeping the community informed and restoring the lighting as quickly as possible,” she said. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to RITBA’s official website and local news outlets for progress reports.

The situation underscores the importance of maintaining aging infrastructure, especially elements that foster community pride and visibility. While the bridge’s structural integrity remains sound, the lighting issue serves as a reminder that even well‑intentioned public‑works projects require ongoing attention and investment.
