Springfield, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced plans to widen Kansas Expressway from four lanes to six between Grand and Sunshine. The $7.64 million improvement project is intended to reduce traffic backups, increase capacity, and enhance safety for commuters and local businesses.
Public meeting and feedback process
MoDOT held a public information session more than a year before construction is slated to begin. Project manager Kara Richart explained that early community input allows the agency to adjust designs before finalizing preliminary plans. “Having these public meetings in advance of when the project is getting constructed allows the public to make those comments,” Richart said. “We’re going to be able to design the project to accommodate the businesses and the property owners throughout the area.”
Key project details
The widening will add two additional lanes, creating a six‑lane corridor that runs from Grand Avenue to Sunshine Street. MoDOT also plans to upgrade several intersections along the stretch to improve traffic flow and reduce queuing during peak hours. Richart noted that the corridor experiences “a high traffic area…with a lot of queuing and backups,” and that the added capacity will help drivers reach their destinations “safely and fast.”
How to comment
Residents who could not attend the meeting have until November 3 to submit comments online. MoDOT’s public comment page can be accessed through the agency’s website, where citizens can review project maps, read the preliminary design, and provide written feedback. The agency has pledged to consider all submitted comments before finalizing the design package.
Why the project matters to Springfield families
For many Springfield families, Kansas Expressway serves as a primary route to schools, workplaces, and regional shopping centers. Reducing congestion not only shortens commute times but also improves safety for parents dropping off children and for seniors traveling the corridor. The project aligns with the community’s broader goal of maintaining reliable transportation infrastructure while supporting local businesses that line the expressway.
Next steps
After the comment period closes, MoDOT will incorporate feedback into the final design and move toward securing construction contracts. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, pending final approvals and funding allocations. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through MoDOT’s website and local news outlets for updates on timelines and any temporary traffic detours that may be required during construction.
