Close to home. Always in the loop.

Sunday Afternoon at Parklands Will Outlast Your Plans

You park at Broad Run and figure you’ll walk an hour, maybe ninety minutes, then grab dinner somewhere. Four hours later you’re still out there, mud on your shoes, your phone dead, and you can’t quite explain what happened to the afternoon.

That’s a pretty standard Parklands experience.

The Parklands of Floyds Fork sits on Louisville’s eastern edge, straddling the Jefferson-Oldham county line, and it’s one of those places that takes a few visits before the scale of it clicks. Four parks — Beckley Creek, Pope Lick, Turkey Run, and Broad Run — connected by about two dozen miles of trail and the winding green corridor of Floyds Fork creek. The whole thing covers roughly 4,000 acres. It opened in phases between 2012 and 2016, funded largely through private philanthropy, and it still feels slightly unbelievable that it exists at this scale within city limits.

Broad Run is the quietest of the four entry points and the one worth going to when you want to think. The trailhead off Routt Road drops you almost immediately into a wooded flood plain, and within ten minutes the traffic noise is gone. The trail follows the creek through bottomland forest — sycamore, cottonwood, pawpaw thickets — and crosses the water on a series of well-built wooden bridges. In late summer the pawpaws actually have fruit on them, which is either exciting or baffling depending on whether you’ve ever eaten one before. (They taste something like a banana that went to college.)

The creek itself is the real spine of the place. Floyds Fork runs clear enough that you can watch small fish holding in the current, and the trail crosses it often enough that you’re always aware of it. Kids wade in at every opportunity. Adults pretend they wouldn’t if they weren’t wearing their good shoes.

Turkey Run Park, a few miles north, is where you go with kids or for a picnic that doesn’t involve fighting for a table. There’s an adventure playground — legitimately good, the kind with climbing structures that make adults slightly nervous — and open meadows that fill with families on any decent weekend. The amphitheater there hosts outdoor events through the warmer months, worth checking their calendar if you’re planning ahead.

If you’re a cyclist, the Louisville Loop threads through the entire system and connects eventually to other parts of the city’s trail network. On a weekend morning, the loop through Parklands gets busy. Mid-week, you can ride stretches without seeing another person for a quarter mile at a stretch.

Entry is free. All of it, always. Parking is free at every trailhead. There are portajohns at most lots and flush restrooms at Turkey Run. The trails are well-signed and well-maintained — this is not an expedition, it’s a public park, and it functions like one.

The best time to go is probably right now, whatever season you’re reading this. Fall turns the flood plain gold and brown in a way that feels almost theatrical. Spring floods the creek and brings out the wildflowers on the upland sections. Summer mornings, before it gets hot, are quiet enough that you might see herons working the shallows. Winter strips the canopy and opens up views of the creek valley that disappear once the leaves come back.

Bring water. The distances add up faster than the terrain suggests, and the creek water, however inviting it looks, is not for drinking. Wear shoes you’re willing to get dirty. Leave your schedule loosely held.

You’ll still be out there when you thought you’d be home.
