The Prehistoric Footprints Under Glass at NMSU’s Geology Museum

The NMSU Geology Museum keeps a Permian-era shark tooth in a drawer you can actually ask to see. That detail says something about the place: it’s a working collection first, a public attraction second, which is exactly what makes it worth your time.

You’ll find the museum on the ground floor of Foster Hall on the New Mexico State University campus, just off University Avenue. Parking near Foster is usually manageable if you come on a weekday morning; weekends are quieter still. Admission is free, and the whole thing takes maybe forty-five minutes to an hour if you read the labels, which you should.

The room isn’t enormous, but it earns its square footage. The centerpiece is a mounted marine reptile — a long-necked plesiosaur cast that dominates one wall and stops most people cold. It’s the kind of fossil replica that reminds you the Chihuahuan Desert you drove through to get here was once a shallow inland sea. That cognitive dissonance is part of the experience.

Beyond the big skeleton, the cases are dense with specimens: fluorescent minerals under UV light, a table of local selenite crystals from the Tularosa Basin, geodes cracked open to show their purple cores. There’s a rotating display of meteorites — some collected from New Mexico desert floors, others on loan — and the signage actually explains how you’d distinguish a meteorite from an ordinary rock in the field, which is the kind of practical information you don’t usually get at a natural history display.

What separates this from a generic university collection is the regional specificity. The museum leans hard into New Mexico geology: the rift valley formation, the volcanic fields down near Potrillo, the gypsum dunes at White Sands. If you’ve been driving around southern New Mexico and wondering why the landscape looks the way it does — layered mesas, sudden black lava flows, white sand where you’d expect brown — the museum gives you a geological vocabulary for what you’ve been seeing.

The staff and student volunteers are knowledgeable without being precious about it. Ask a question and you’ll get a real answer, not a rehearsed script. On the afternoon I visited, a geology grad student was re-cataloging part of the mineral collection and stopped to explain the difference between two types of feldspar sitting side by side in an open tray. That kind of spontaneous conversation happens here more than at places with velvet ropes.

It’s a good stop with kids who are past the “please don’t touch everything” age — roughly eight and up. The fluorescent mineral display in particular tends to produce genuine reactions. There’s also a small gift area with local mineral specimens for sale, most priced between five and twenty dollars, so it’s a reasonable place to pick up something more interesting than a keychain.

The museum is open Monday through Friday during regular university hours; call ahead or check the NMSU website before making a special trip, since hours can shift around academic breaks. There’s no parking fee if you use the visitor spaces on University Avenue, and the whole visit costs you nothing but the time it takes to find Foster Hall — which, for the record, is easier than it sounds once you’re on campus.
