The Old City’s Last Real Dive Still Pours Till 3 a.m

The Square Room has exactly seventeen bar stools. Someone counted once, during a slow Sunday when the bar was quiet enough to bother. On a Friday night, though, you’ll be lucky to find one open, and the narrow room fills with a particular kind of Knoxville crowd — musicians between sets, bartenders off their own shifts, the occasional out-of-towner who wandered in from Market Square and never quite left.

The venue sits on Union Avenue in the Old City, upstairs from what used to be a print shop and down the block from enough trendy new spots to make you appreciate how stubbornly it has refused to update itself. The walls are dark, the lighting is low without trying to be atmospheric, and the sound system handles everything from jazz to post-punk depending on who’s working the booth. It is not trying to be anything other than what it is: a room where music happens late and the bar stays open until three in the morning, one of the few places in Knoxville that actually does.

The Square Room has been booking live music for years, and it does so with less fanfare than you might expect from a place that regularly pulls in touring acts. The calendar runs heavy on indie rock, blues, and a rotating cast of local acts that the Knoxville scene keeps quietly producing. Tickets for most shows land between ten and twenty dollars at the door — cash welcomed, card accepted reluctantly. The room holds maybe two hundred people at capacity, and the stage is close enough that you can watch a guitarist’s left hand without squinting.

The bar menu is not complicated. Beer, whiskey, cocktails that are mixed correctly without being precious about it. The well bourbon is drinkable. The draft selection rotates and tends toward local and regional breweries without making a performance of it. If you want a craft cocktail with a four-paragraph backstory, this is not your room. If you want a gin and tonic while a band you’ve never heard of convinces you it might be the best set you’ve seen in years, you’re in the right place.

What makes the Square Room worth knowing is partly the hours and partly the lack of pretense, but mostly it’s the room itself. Acoustically it is better than it has any right to be — sound sits in the space without bouncing around the way it does in so many converted retail venues. Acts tend to come back. That usually means something.

The Old City has changed considerably in the last decade. Restaurants have opened and closed, buildings have been renovated, the foot traffic has shifted. The Square Room has watched all of it from the same address. It does not have a particularly active social media presence and it doesn’t much need one. The crowd it draws largely already knows about it, and the ones who find it by accident tend to come back.

Parking in the Old City on a weekend night requires patience. The garage on Jackson Avenue is your best option. Shows typically start between eight and ten, and if you want a stool you should arrive early. The music almost always runs past midnight. That, more than anything else, is the point.
