Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray Responds to Suspicious Capitol Letter

Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray issued a statement on Thursday afternoon after a letter addressed to his office was intercepted at the Wyoming Capitol building. The letter, which arrived in the Capitol mailroom, was deemed a non‑threatening hoax, but state officials emphasized the need for vigilance.

Statement from the Secretary of State

“We take this situation very seriously,” Gray said in his statement. “I want to thank the Wyoming Office of Highway Patrol for their diligence in working with our office in handling this issue safely. Our office is monitoring this situation and working closely with law enforcement at both the state and federal level. We will continue our work and we will not be intimidated.”

Law‑enforcement response

Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesman Aaron Brown confirmed that the letter contained no hazardous materials and posed no threat to public safety. Brown explained that the letter never left the Capitol’s mailroom and was intercepted before it could be delivered to Gray’s office.

“Because of the times we live in, we have to treat these incidents seriously,” Brown said, noting that the letter turned out to be harmless. The Highway Patrol, which is responsible for security at the Capitol, coordinated the response with the FBI and Cheyenne Police. Brown told Townsquare Media that the FBI is investigating this incident along with similar letters reported in other states.

National context

The Associated Press reported that threatening letters have also been sent to congressional offices in Washington, D.C., and to various state election offices across the country. While the Wyoming incident appears to be an isolated hoax, the broader pattern underscores the importance of robust security measures at government facilities.

Impact on Wyoming residents

Wyoming officials reassured the public that the Capitol remains a safe place for citizens and state employees. By promptly involving both state and federal agencies, the response demonstrates a commitment to protecting democratic institutions without succumbing to intimidation.

Gray’s statement reflects a broader stance by Wyoming’s leadership to address potential threats decisively while maintaining transparency with the public. The cooperation between the Highway Patrol, the FBI, and local police illustrates a coordinated effort to safeguard the state’s legislative hub.

What’s next?

State officials will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with federal investigators. No further action is anticipated unless new information emerges. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to law‑enforcement authorities.

As the investigation proceeds, Wyoming’s leadership remains steadfast in upholding the safety and integrity of its Capitol building, reinforcing the message that threats—real or imagined—will not deter the state’s commitment to open government.
