When Hurricane Isaias battered Alabama, animal shelters across the nation mobilized to protect vulnerable pets. Within 24 hours of receiving a request, the Southern Indiana Community Shelter Alliance (SICSA) coordinated the transport of 13 dogs from the storm‑hit region to Ohio.
Rapid coordination saves the dogs
Jessie Sullivan, director of shelter operations at SICSA, explained that Best Friends Animal Society first reached out to SICSA and the Pets of Ohio rescue team. “We had 13 dogs headed this way,” she said. The call came Saturday morning, and by Sunday the dogs were loaded into a transportation van and on their way to a new, safe environment.
Community effort ensures a smooth transition
Upon arrival, the dogs entered a quiet area at SICSA to reduce stress from the long journey. “Sometimes it’s obviously a very stressful situation to make that long of a trip. It’s a lot of change for them,” Sullivan noted. The shelter is working closely with local partners—including PORT, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, and Adopt‑A‑Pet—to provide medical checks, foster placements, and eventual adoption opportunities.
Foster homes and adoption plans
Several of the dogs have already been placed in foster homes through the Pets of Ohio rescue team, giving them a stable environment while they await permanent families. “They’ll be available for adoption very soon,” Sullivan added. Once the medical team completes examinations and any needed care, the dogs will be listed for adoption on SICSA’s website and partner platforms.
All breeds and sizes welcome
The rescued group includes a variety of breeds and medium‑sized dogs, reflecting the diverse canine population affected by the storm. Their arrival underscores the importance of regional cooperation among shelters, rescue organizations, and volunteers when natural disasters strike.
How you can help
Community members interested in fostering or adopting are encouraged to visit SICSA’s website for more information on the available dogs and the application process. Donations of food, blankets, and supplies are also welcomed to support the ongoing care of these and other rescued animals.
For updates on the dogs’ progress and future adoption events, follow SICSA’s social media channels or contact the shelter directly.
