Choosing a path after high school can feel overwhelming, but Washoe County families have a new resource right in their community. The Washoe County School District is holding its annual College Fair on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Joe Crowley Student Union on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
What attendees can expect
The event is free and open to all high school students and their families. More than 80 representatives from colleges and universities will be on hand, offering direct answers to questions about admissions requirements, academic programs, student housing, scholarships and financial aid. Spanish interpretation will be provided to ensure language barriers do not limit participation.
Local and out‑of‑state options
Students can connect with representatives from Nevada institutions such as the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The fair also welcomes schools from neighboring states, including Arizona State University, Boise State University, Oregon State University, Washington State University, the University of Oregon, the University of Idaho, and the United States Naval Academy.
Supporting first‑generation college seekers
Ana Anderson, coordinator for the district’s Family School Partnerships, emphasized the fair’s importance for first‑generation college students. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for all high school students and families to learn more about colleges, careers, scholarships, and many other aspects of higher education, and it is particularly helpful for students who will be the first in their families to attend college,” Anderson said. “It is never too early to begin making plans and exploring opportunities for college, careers, or military service after high school.”
District leadership encourages participation
District Chief Student Services Officer Dr. Paul LaMarca urged families to attend. “The College Fair is a valuable tool for students to see the breadth of options available and to start building the relationships that will support their future success,” he said.
How to make the most of the fair
Families are advised to bring a list of questions, note-taking supplies, and any relevant academic transcripts or test scores. Engaging directly with college counselors can help clarify eligibility, identify scholarship opportunities and demystify the application process. The fair’s centralized location at the university campus also gives students a glimpse of campus life and facilities.
Community impact
By bringing together a wide range of post‑secondary institutions in one accessible venue, the College Fair supports Washoe County’s commitment to educational opportunity and family involvement. The event aligns with the district’s broader goal of preparing students for successful, purpose‑driven futures while reinforcing the role of families as partners in education.
