On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m., Kenosha residents will gather at Friendship Park, 5834 6th Avenue, for the public unveiling of a new community mural. The artwork, commissioned by the Kenosha Coalition for Dismantling Racism (CFDR), was designed and painted under the direction of local artist Tia Richardson.
Collaborative Design Process
Richardson led a series of design workshops that brought together a diverse cross‑section of Kenosha residents. Participants reflected on the challenges their city faces, imagined possibilities for the future, and discussed what transformation looks like in their neighborhoods. The resulting mural is described by its creators as a visual journey into shared humanity—a reminder that Kenosha is a place of many people.
Community Painting Day
After the design phase, the project opened its brushes to the public. Under Richardson’s guidance, volunteers of all ages—from toddlers to octogenarians—were invited to apply the first layers of paint to the wall. “We had painters bridging many social categories, and ages ranging from toddler to octogenarian,” said Cameron Swallow, the CFDR organizer of the mural project. “Every brushstroke represented shared ownership of something lasting and meaningful in our community.”
Unveiling Event Details
The Oct. 17 presentation will feature brief remarks from Richardson, Swallow, and several participants who helped shape the design and painting phases. Attendees will then have an opportunity to ask questions about the collaborative art effort. The event is free and open to the public; no registration is required.
About the Kenosha Coalition for Dismantling Racism
The CFDR commissioned the mural as part of its broader work to foster dialogue and unity across the city. By bringing together residents from a wide range of backgrounds during both the design and painting stages, the coalition placed community participation at the heart of the project from start to finish.
