Formula 1 Secures Rwanda Grand Prix for Early 2030s, Expanding to All Continents

Formula 1 confirmed on Tuesday that Rwanda will host a new Grand Prix beginning in the early 2030s. The agreement secures a ten‑year contract for a purpose‑built circuit in Bugesera, a district southeast of Kigali, and promises to have the track ready “early in the next decade.”

Rwanda’s Vision for Global Motorsport

Rwandan President Paul Kagame praised the announcement at a launch event in Kigali, calling it “a success and a milestone for the entire continent, especially for the African fans.” He added that the race could pave the way for additional Formula 1 events across Africa, boosting tourism and showcasing the region’s capacity to host world‑class sporting spectacles.

F1’s Strategic Expansion

F1 President and chief executive Stefano Domenicali said the addition of Rwanda brings the championship to every inhabited continent. “With Rwanda joining the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race in every inhabited continent, bringing the world championship closer than ever to fans around the globe,” he said. Domenicali emphasized that the partnership was built on a long‑term commitment and a clear vision for creating meaningful impact in Africa.

Historical Context

The last Formula 1 race on African soil was the South African Grand Prix in 1993. The new African Grand Prix will therefore end a 40‑year absence and fulfill a long‑standing ambition expressed by seven‑time world champion Lewis Hamilton, the sport’s only Black driver. Hamilton has publicly advocated for an African race, noting that it would inspire a new generation of fans and drivers.

Economic and Cultural Benefits

Rwanda’s government expects the Grand Prix to generate significant economic activity, from construction jobs to hospitality and tourism revenue. The Bugesera International Airport, already a hub for regional travel, will likely see increased traffic, and local businesses anticipate a surge in international visitors during race weekends.

Beyond economics, officials highlight the cultural exchange the event will foster. By bringing a globally recognized sport to Rwanda, the country aims to showcase its stability, safety, and modern infrastructure to a worldwide audience.

Looking Ahead

Construction of the circuit is slated to begin later this year, with the goal of completing the facility well before the inaugural race. The ten‑year contract ensures a stable, long‑term presence for Formula 1 in Africa, allowing the sport to build deep roots and develop local talent pipelines.

Fans across the continent have already expressed excitement on social media, eagerly awaiting the chance to experience a Formula 1 weekend without traveling to Europe or Asia. As the countdown to the first race begins, Rwanda positions itself as a new hub for high‑speed competition and international collaboration.
