Demolition of The Flats at Redstone Delayed as Owner Claims Inability to Pay $650K Bill

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A court‑ordered demolition of the Flats at Redstone apartment complex on Golf Road has stalled after the owner, Lurin Real Estate Holdings, filed a motion stating it lacks the funds to cover the more than $650,000 demolition bill.

Judge’s order and the owner’s response

In February, a Madison County judge ordered the complex, which has been labeled a public nuisance, to be torn down within 90 days. The order was issued after years of complaints from neighbors about deteriorating conditions, safety hazards, and the negative impact on property values in the surrounding neighborhood.

Lurin Real Estate Holdings responded in a recent court filing, arguing that the court‑appointed receiver’s claim the company is “refusing to pay” is inaccurate. The filing states, “The company simply does not have the money to satisfy the demolition invoice.” The owner requests additional time to secure financing or explore alternative solutions.

Potential impact on the community

If the demolition does not proceed as scheduled, the vacant structures could remain for an extended period, posing continued safety risks such as fire hazards, trespassing, and possible structural collapse. Local residents have expressed worry that the lingering eyesore could depress home values and deter new investment along Golf Road.

City officials have not yet commented on the latest filing, but the Madison County Sheriff’s Office has indicated they will continue to monitor the site for any illegal activity. The county’s code‑enforcement department is also prepared to take further action should the property become a public safety threat.

Legal background

The court‑appointed receiver was installed earlier this year after the property was deemed a public nuisance under Alabama law. The receiver’s role is to manage the asset, collect any outstanding rent, and ensure the property is either restored or removed. The $650,000 demolition estimate includes labor, equipment, and disposal of debris in compliance with state environmental regulations.

Lurin’s filing does not dispute the amount owed; it merely asserts an inability to pay. The owner is seeking a modification of the demolition timeline while it explores financing options, including potential partnerships with local developers who might be interested in redeveloping the site once cleared.

What residents can do

Neighbors are encouraged to report any suspicious activity at the complex to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Community groups have also begun organizing a neighborhood watch to keep the area safe while the legal process continues.

City council members are expected to discuss the situation at the next public works meeting, where they may consider additional municipal resources or incentives to expedite the demolition and pave the way for new housing or commercial development that aligns with Huntsville’s growth plans.
