Riverdale’s Hidden River Road Runs Straight to Cajun’s Wharf

On a weekday around noon, the lunch crowd at Heights Taco & Tamale Co. on Kavanaugh Boulevard moves with the easy efficiency of a place that’s been at this long enough to know exactly what it’s doing. The line at the counter snakes past a chalkboard listing the day’s specials, and almost everyone in it has already made up their mind before they reach the register.

The restaurant occupies a converted bungalow in the Heights neighborhood, which means low ceilings, a few tight dining rooms, and a covered patio out back that fills up fast on mild days. Parking can be an adventure — the lot behind the building is small, and street spots on Kavanaugh go quickly — so earlier is better, or show up after 1:15 when the rush starts to thin.

The menu is built around Tex-Mex with honest Arkansas sensibilities. The tamales are the anchor: dense, hand-rolled, and available in pork, chicken, or black bean. The pork version, finished with red chile sauce and a scattering of cotija, is the one that keeps regulars coming back on a near-weekly basis. Order two if this is lunch; three if it’s been that kind of morning.

Tacos come on house-pressed corn tortillas, and the options rotate seasonally alongside a core lineup that includes carnitas, barbacoa, and a roasted cauliflower that doesn’t try to pretend it’s meat — it just works on its own terms. The queso fundido, served in a small cast-iron skillet with chorizo and warm flour tortillas, is the right answer to the appetizer question every time. Skip the chips-and-salsa impulse and order this instead.

Prices are reasonable by any standard. Most tacos run $3.50 to $5. The tamale plate, which comes with rice, beans, and a side salad, lands around $12 to $14 depending on the filling. A full lunch for two, with drinks, rarely tops $35.

The drink list includes local beers on draft — typically a rotation from Arkansas breweries — along with margaritas that are cold and properly tart without leaning on a premixed sour mix. The agua frescas change with the season and are worth checking; a hibiscus version in summer is particularly good.

Service is counter-style at lunch, full table service at dinner. The dinner hours — Tuesday through Saturday starting at five — are less hectic and worth considering if a slower pace is the goal. The back patio, strung with lights and bordered by a low fence, has a different character after dark: quieter, more neighborhood bar than lunch spot.

Heights Taco & Tamale Co. has been on Kavanaugh long enough that it’s become one of those places locals mention without thinking, the way you’d mention a good hardware store or a reliable mechanic. It doesn’t need to explain itself. The tamales are made from scratch, the tortillas are pressed to order, and the room smells like toasted corn and chiles from the moment the door opens. That’s the whole story.

It’s open Tuesday through Sunday. Lunch starts at eleven. Reservations aren’t taken for parties under six, so arriving early — especially on weekends — is the practical move.
