Fado Irish Pub Has Been Doing This Longer Than You Think

The Guinness arrives already half-settled, which means the bartender poured it two minutes ago and timed it correctly, which means you are in the right place. Fado Irish Pub on Pennsylvania Avenue has been open since 1996, a fact that feels improbable given that the stretch of Penn Ave between the Capitol and the White House has swallowed and replaced a dozen other bars in that time. Fado survived because it figured out early what it was and refused to become something else.

What it is: a loud, comfortable, properly dim Irish pub on the ground floor of a building in Penn Quarter, a short walk from the Verizon Center — or Capital One Arena, depending on your vintage. The interior is genuine enough that it reportedly required shipping materials from Ireland. Whether that story is marketing or fact barely matters; the low ceilings, mismatched wood, and genuine draft lines do the job regardless of provenance.

The beer selection is the main event. Guinness, Smithwick’s, Harp, Magners cider, and a rotating cast of Irish whiskeys are what most people come for, and the bar staff knows how to move on a busy night without making you feel like an afterthought. If you want something local, they carry a few D.C. and mid-Atlantic drafts alongside the standards. During Caps or Wizards games, the place fills to a specific pressure — not quite unbearable, but you will definitely know the score.

The food is better than it needs to be for a sports bar. The Irish stew is honest — broth-forward and heavy, not the cream-thickened approximation you often get. The fish and chips use cod, not pollock, and the batter crisps properly. The shepherd’s pie runs about $16 and could double as a meal for someone who skipped lunch. Nothing on the menu is going to make you Instagram anything, which is also fine.

Fado works best as a destination with purpose: you have tickets to a game, you need somewhere reliable to watch a match, you want a pint before a show at the National Theatre nearby, or you simply want to sit somewhere that has not been renovated into beige oblivion. The happy hour, running weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m., offers $5 drafts and discounted appetizers. It draws a mix of Hill staffers, tourists who wandered in from the Mall, and regulars who have been coming since the Clinton administration.

Brunch on weekends adds a full Irish breakfast — eggs, rashers, black and white pudding, grilled tomato, brown bread — for around $18, which is the most specifically Irish thing on the menu and worth ordering once on principle. The bottomless mimosa option exists if that is your crowd.

The noise level at peak hours is not for everyone. Conversations during a playoff game require commitment. But on a Tuesday at 6 p.m., or on a quiet Sunday morning over that full breakfast, Fado settles into something genuinely relaxed. Penn Quarter is full of places that opened, peaked, and closed. This one is still here, still pouring correctly, still exactly what it advertised in 1996. That is either unremarkable or quietly impressive, depending on how much you know about the restaurant business in this city.
