Drag Racing on a Tuesday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Test Track

Most people don’t know you can drive your own car down a professional quarter-mile drag strip on a weeknight for about thirty dollars. No race license. No roll cage. No special equipment. Just your vehicle, a helmet if you have one (loaners are available), and whatever nerve you brought with you.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway sits up on the north end of the valley, which puts it a solid twenty-five minutes from most of Henderson, but the drive up I-15 is quick enough at dusk. I went on a Thursday evening last spring with my friend Carlos, who owns a modestly tuned Civic and had been talking about doing this for years. We pulled in around 5:30, well before the sun dropped behind the Spring Mountains, and the place already had a low buzz going — maybe forty cars ranging from family SUVs driven by curious first-timers to seriously built muscle cars with crews in matching shirts.

Registration is straightforward. You pay at the window, sign a waiver, watch a brief safety orientation video, and then get in line. The staff is calm and direct — these are people who run this every week, and they don’t oversell the experience or treat you like you don’t belong. If your car has any obvious safety issues, they’ll turn you down, but anything road-legal and reasonably maintained is going to pass.

Waiting in the staging lanes is half the fun. You roll forward slowly, watching the cars ahead light up the Christmas tree and disappear down the strip in under fifteen seconds. The sound when a built V8 launches fifty feet in front of you is genuinely something — not stadium-loud, but close enough that you feel it in your chest. Carlos kept adjusting his grip on the wheel even though we were barely moving.

When it was my turn, the starter gave me a nod, I rolled up to the stage beam, and then everything happened faster than I was ready for. My run was not impressive by any measure — a stock crossover does not belong on a drag strip in any competitive sense — but crossing that finish line and seeing my time on the board (16.2 seconds, if you’re curious, and yes I’m slightly embarrassed) felt genuinely good. You get multiple runs throughout the evening, so there’s time to experiment with launch technique, tire pressure, whatever you’re trying.

Between runs, people wander the pits, look at each other’s cars, and talk setups. It’s one of those rare settings where someone with a $90,000 built Camaro will spend ten minutes explaining launch RPM to a complete stranger in a Camry. Nobody’s precious about it.

Open Test & Tune nights run on select Thursdays and Fridays throughout the year, with some Saturday events mixed in. Check the LVMS website for the current schedule because dates shift seasonally. Entry runs around $30 for the driver; spectators pay a few dollars at the gate. Bring cash as a backup. Helmets are required and available to borrow at no charge if you don’t own one.

If you’ve never done it, the first run will feel over before you knew it started. That’s fine. By the third pass, you’ll understand why people do this every single week.
