Josephine’s Plate Turns a Sunday Brunch into Something Personal

What does it mean for a restaurant to feel like it was made for you? I asked myself that the first time I walked into Josephine’s Plate on a slow Sunday morning, steam rising off my coffee before I’d even found a seat, the smell of sweet potato waffles drifting in from the kitchen. It’s a small place — maybe a dozen tables — on the north end of the Drake neighborhood, and it fills up fast on weekends, so plan accordingly.

The concept is straightforward: elevated Southern and soul food, executed with care, at prices that don’t feel like you’re being punished for wanting a good meal. The menu runs to things like shrimp and grits, fried catfish, chicken and waffles, and the kind of breakfast plates that anchor your whole day. But nothing here feels like it was pulled from a generic playbook. The grits are thick and properly seasoned, served with a brightness — usually green onion, a little heat — that keeps them from going heavy. The catfish, lightly cornmeal-crusted, arrives golden and genuinely hot, not the kind of hot that fades on the walk from kitchen to table.

I keep coming back to the sweet potato waffle. It sounds like a menu gimmick — something a place slaps on to look creative — but it isn’t. The sweetness from the potato is subtle, and they pair it with a whipped honey butter that cuts through the richness without overwhelming anything. Get it with the candied bacon on the side if you’re committed to the morning.

The owner, Tangela Ward, opened Josephine’s Plate with the explicit intention of bringing a type of cooking that Des Moines didn’t have enough of: Black-owned, intentional, rooted in actual family recipes rather than approximations of them. That intention shows. Service has a warmth that feels earned rather than performed — staff genuinely seems to know the regulars, and first-timers don’t feel like interruptions.

Prices are reasonable for the quality. Most brunch plates run $13–$18. Coffee is straightforward, no elaborate espresso program, which honestly suits the mood of the place better than a pour-over bar would. If you want a mimosa, they’ve got it; if you want orange juice and water, nobody makes you feel like you’re underspending.

The room itself is comfortable without trying too hard. Some art on the walls, good light if you snag a table near the front window, music in the background that’s audible but not an imposition. It’s the kind of place where a two-hour brunch doesn’t feel like an accident — it just happens because nothing is rushing you out.

My honest advice: go on a weekday if your schedule allows. The weekend crowd is enthusiastic and the wait can stretch to forty-five minutes by 10:30 on a Saturday. A Tuesday morning, though, and you can sit down, order slowly, read something, refill your coffee twice. That version of Josephine’s Plate is about as good as a morning in Des Moines gets.
